My car's on SORN and the insurance has ran out.

Whilst looking at the comparison sites, I noticed that if I decide to insure it today, it's £100 more than it would cost me, than if I wanted the policy to start at the end of the month.

Any experts on here know the reason for that ?

I'm guessing the sooner you need the policy, the more 'desperate' you are and hence a chance of a price hike ?

Or is it just peculiar to me/my car ? smile

Get another quote next week. The numbers seem to change consistently even resubmitting the same info!

I suppose me and the car will be a month older, but neither of us will be celebrating a birthday in that period smile

I noticed this whilst using a Range Rover 5 litre S/C
It went from 788 if I wanted it the next day to 698 if I wanted it a 27 days later.. No birthdays or anything between the two dates.. I called up the company and they couldn't explain it

Could be because you've got less time to shop around? For most people who's car isn't SORNed they don't have the option to wait a month...

As above, its less time to shop about nothing to do with it being cheaper in a month.

I always add a month, admiral let you take it out anytime within 45 days of the quote.

About one month I'd say...

Had the same sort of thing sorting insurance for my son's first car. If I wanted to insure today, it was £2000, tomorrow £1950, next day £1880 day after £1780 and finally £1720. It didn't get any cheaper after that.

Sure I saw a Direct Line advert the other day that said you save an extra x% if you take out a policy y days in advance.

Had this with mine before I bought it. If I put the start date as the date my previous policy ran out (3 weeks in the future) it was £300 cheaper than doing it 2 days beforehand.

Possibly to do with needing it so soon and therefore being more likely to pay more for something that's needed if one wants to keep the car going.

This time I'll do it right smile

When insuring my car, I was due to pick it up on the Saturday, it was £100 cheaper to insure it from the following Monday - so I did and just let my Dad drive it home.

Here's the answer to young-driver insurance! Soon as the kid is born, get a quote for a 2014 Fiesta ST to start in 17 year's time...

As far as I know, most insurance companies can let you buy a policy up to 30 days in advance so just set the start date accordingly.

I'm 25 in twelve days, the price difference from now till if I initiate the policy afterwards is fairly substantial. Good thing about growing old I suppose?

I reckon so. If you want it starting immediately you are probably in a situation where you HAVE to get it insured pronto, and you are more likely to just grab the first ballpark quote. If you are starting in a month you are more likely to be shopping around for the best price...

I reckon this - if your insurance runs out tomorrow, you are more likely to accept what is on offer.
