Looking for some help to figure out what may have caused an issue with the steering on my car.

I got 2 new tyres fitted a few days ago, and since then I've noticed that when I turn the wheel to the left by about 30 degrees or more, and I then try to return to the center from about 15 degrees to the left there is resistance as if something is pushing against the wheel. Once it is back to center the wheel wants to turn left again, and if I let go it will turn about 5 degrees to the left itself until I turn the wheel more than about 10 degrees to the right and it will return to the center and stay there.

This wasn't happening before I got the tyres changed, so I'm pretty sure this must be related, but I don't see how changing the tyres could cause this problem. I got the new tyres fitted to the rear wheels, then had them swapped to the front (so now it has the same tyres all round). Is it possible that the tracking was affected when the wheels were swapped from back to front?

I checked the tyre pressures and they were all over the place (even though I told the garage what to set them to) so I stopped at a garage on the way home from work tonight and corrected the pressures but that's not made any difference.

Any ideas what it could be or anything I could check?

The tyres now fitted to the front will have the wear pattern of the rear axle so its not surprising that you're having issues.

Dependent on the wear pattern and remaining tread depth, you may well push through it in a few hundred miles.

I had this once on a van. Had the tracking done and it was good again

Thanks for the replies.

I probably didnt make it very clear in the op - when it went in for the tyre change it had Michelin PSS on the front (with 5-6mm tread) and shot Avons on the rear. So the new Michelin PSS went on the back to replace the Avons, then the wheels were swapped back to front so its brand new at the front and the 5-6mm at the rear.

It's going back to the garage at the weekend for them to check if anything is stopping the wheel from turning (I doubt it). If they dont find anything I'll get it in for a geo set up.

I rotated mine a few months ago and it did the same as yours, had the tracking checked, it was out but the car wasn't any better after it was fixed. Swapped to winter tyres 2 weeks ago now the car is fine. I have deduced it's the tyres that were on the back don't like being on the front. They will be going back on in the original positions in the spring!

I don't think this has anything to do with tyres. I think you have a PAS system fault. Check the PAS fluid and the ancillary drive belt.

Best tyres should go on the rear axle so you should just have put the new tyres on the rear and left it at that. Try swapping them back round, see if it makes any difference.
