Speed kills they say. Exceeding a speed limit kills they say.

Question is, what's a SAFE speed to tavel at then? Im asking this one for the anti car/pro speed camera lobby to answer.

Ya see, i have a suspicion that these lot simply dont KNOW the answer, so i thought id ask em.

Lets pose a purely hypothetical scenario, and see if even the most hardened pro scamera lobbyist can put up a reasonable counter argument.

Ok, the speed limit on road A is 60 mph. Whats a "safe" speed to travel at?
20, 30, 40,50, 100??

None of the above. Need a clue?
How about local variation in site conditions my lentil/chick pea loving friends?
As ahem, "road safety" know-it-alls, you should have known that, but you decided instead that a blanket 60 limit on road A was enough.
Ya see, i forgot to tell you about the local conditions on road A.
There are no street lights on road A.
There is fog to a distance of less than 100m.
There is snow on road A.
Whats a safe speed for car A?

Stumped huh? Well, heres a bigger clue....."it all depends on the circumstances at that locality at the particular instant YOU are travelling it".

Dont just take my word for it, think about it for a second; its what we all do every time we drive. We adapt to local conditions!
The number on that sign is just that; A number.
Even as a guidance number i feel it is pointless to use it for reference, its simply to cater for easy enforcement of an outdated traffic law.

So, tell me, whats a SAFE speed to travel at?

Well, TomTom3 comes with the max safe speed set as 124mph, which I think is a good starting point

For me, having regard to all the circumstances at that point in time? The speed I normally adopt.

Best wishes all,
Dave.

Do you mean when you get tired? Or when your tyre gets tired?

I thought the answer was obvious and is of course 0 mph but..... then some numpty would run into the back of you as you would then be an obstruction in the road. So 0 mph is not safe.

And of course the correct answer is one that allows you to stop comfortably, on your own side of the road, within the distance that you know to be clear.

That's called the safe speed rule and it gave Safe Speed its name.

Exactly, and it varies from one moment to the next, to make blanket limits useless and hazard warning signs more logical.

(Not a forest of signs as we so often have now, but the occasional "deceptive bend", or "concealed entrance" and so on.)

And i notice not ONE attempt by a pro scamera lobbyist or "supporter" to define a safe speed!
Thats pretty amazing isnt it? Considering what they spout on their websites about "speed kills" "20's plenty" (piss off!) etc etc.
Yet given an opportunity to actually DEFINE a safe speed to travel at, we hear nothing! Not a peep.
Why is that? I think its because they cannot now define a safe speed to travel at because the moment they attempt to, itll knock their speed kills policy into the weeds, itll contradict their whole argument!

Still waiting here...

I find the cars adorned with "20's plenty" stickers quite helpful, as it identifies the shit drivers amongst us. Much in the same way as L plates, Taxi signs and "baby on board" stickers do.

You mentioning Volvos reminds me a few days ago I was reading something about a young fellow (obviously a complete hooligan) driving at 140 mph at night in a car he didn't own, and pursuing another vehicle into the bargain. I wonder how he behaves when he's out in his own car, probably a clapped out Skoda estate car or some such.

BTW, Gary has been a bit quiet this last couple of days. Anything known?

Best wishes all,
Dave - in 'having a go at Streetcop' mode.
