So im lying in my pit, dreaming dreams of god knows what, when the acrid smell of burning cables jolts me from my slumber.
After sniffing the air momentarily, my ears start to function and im drawn to the sound of a revving engine someway down the street.
Peering through the frost clad windows with foggy eyes, i make out what looks like a car pulled into a gateway opposite the main road.I can tell from the reverse lights that its a corsa. I watch as the car revs its boy racer exhaust and then it shoots off up the road and is gone.
Along with my now adrenalized senses, i can hear a ticking, like a time bomb. What the hell is that? Another look out of the window and all is apparent.
Someone's pride and joy has been unceremoniously dumped, with what sounds like an engine thats knocking its way to oblivion still running.
Shoes, socks and jeans are on as i exit my warm room, my trainers are laced by the time i get to the bottom stair....(howd i do that??).
A short jog down the road in freezing conditions later and there she is, a silver blue corsa. The knocking has slowed now, and then it stops, almost like a dying heartbeat.
As i cautiously approach, the source of the knocking becomes apparent, its the starter motor solenoid clicking as the battery dies.
The smell of plastic burning is strongest at the rear of the car, although no attempt has been made to burn it. I figure the wiring must have shorted as they drove it to be broken for parts, filling the inside with toxic fumes, hence the reason for them dumping it.
The steering lock lies useless, hanging under the broken steering cowl, the only other damage being the drivers door.
Its top frame is very slightly distorted, where the felons had levered at it to get a hook inside and lift the locking button, and some cracked paint lower down where the stress of their efforts became concentrated.

A phone call to the police gets me to a call centre, and from there on hold, eventually getting the response of "we'll send someone down".
Well, 20 minutes comes and goes as i stand in the dark and cold, waiting for the good guys to show up. They dont.
From way off, i can hear a loud exhaust. Its intensity grows as it gets closer.
Its headlights appear from around the bend, the engine is now idling as it coasts towards the stricken, stolen corsa.
And then they pull up behind it.
3 ratboys inside havent seen me and are obviously just seeing if its clear to finish the old girl off.
As the passenger door opens i spotlight the whole car.
The effect on them is weird; they freeze like rabbits in a headlight, waiting for the impact.
Number 3 ratboy in the back sinks slowly from view, his burberry clad noggin just visible as he attempts to hide.
Seconds seem like minutes. Theyre scared. They dont know what/who i am and its spooked em. I hold my ground keeping the light full on them, saying nothing and not moving.
Enough is just too much for them as "stirling" in the drivers seat spins his wheels for all he's worth and disappears up the road in a cloud of smoke.

By now ive had more than enough of waiting for the police to show and so i call them again.
They tell me that theyve no record of my earlier call, that its not on the log, despite them promising to send someone, and despite them taking my details earlier!
I repeat where i am, tell them whats just happened and to "get someone down here now".
Again they tell me theyll send someone.
15 minutes later one plod turns up, despite the copshop being only 1 mile away....must be a new response record.

The strangest thing about all this is that the stolen cars reg is almost identical to the scums car. Neither had any reports on them, although "stirlings" car is from just down the road apparently.

And here i am, knackered and pissed off with the state of our law enforcement. Its a good job it wasnt a murder in progress as the villan could have got away clean.
Another vehicle saved, more bad guys vanquished, evidence collected and made available for the police, doing their job for them.
Too bad that the likes of me is a better copper than the real coppers, isnt it?

At least someone will get their car back, but if id just left it, the lack of interest by the local cops would have resulted in another statistic.
Its about time they WOKE UP.

Well done mate

Next time tell the police you saw one of them with a gun, apparently they get round rather quick and proper trafpol boys too

or they call in the Health & Safety officer first.

If it was me & I was in my Volvo I would have anialated their car to get some comeuppance back I'm sure no-one would complain.

This isn't the first time I've heard that the call centre has no trace of a call. What's going on? Surely these days it's a doddle to audit this stuff?

Shouldn`t have been! In line with the "motorway breakdown" thread, it should have been recovered by police contractor to a SOCO compound where it could be examined. Given that you could swear that no-one had been near the car from the time it was abandoned to the time BiB arrived, tis was the ideal opportunity to nail the scrotes who nicked it using prints or DNA.

Didn't think they bothered to fingerprint for car crime these days?

When my brother's car got broken into it was "here's your crime number, next!"

I'm NOT surprised Deltaf. In my experience of our BiB's, it's exactly the same story. They may (always) claim that the lack of response was a "one off" but in reality if your name is known and you are one of the "great and good" You DO get a faster response, ask your local MP! If his house or car is under attack................2 minutes at the most!

My Gradfather is / was a Crown Court Judge (now deseased). I was visiting quite a few years ago and had my car broken into whilst parked there.

Called the Police and gave them the address.

I don't recall how long it was till they got there - but it was quite a long time (hr+). The coppers were most miffed that I hadn't told them "its the Judge's house"................

Well - whatever the lack of Police response - can I just commend you on your actions.

Good work.
