The 3 Porsche 911's

As most of you know, there have only ever been 3 totally different 911's over 50 years. Within these 3 are of course a multitude of separate models, facelifts and upgrades etc.

1963 to 1998 - The original air cooled cars
1998 to 2011 - The water cooled cars
2011 to date - The latest 991

Which is your favourite era?

Surely the choice should be air or water cooled

Since the 993 they're now simply new versions of existing cars......aren't they?

The 991 is a totally new car and is a stand alone car in its own right.

Aircooled all the way. Anything after bar GT cars are saloons by comparison. My 2007 turbo literally feels like an S class compared to my aircooled Carrera! All the controls in my turbo i.e. clutch, steering and gearshift now feel far too light!!! Amazing how the cars have been refined and evolved by Porsche to a point since 1998 where driver skill almost counts for nothing and you can basically drive the newer stuff in your sleep!

I'm not sure that's entirely true of an early 996. I still get plenty of driver involvement out of mine.

agree, I am losing all interest in newer cars. I can't stand how light all the controls are, totally useless. Cars are so big now as well with too many electronics between you and the road. Any car I buy now will be 90's or earlier

they're all superb drivers cars but you don't have to stay as focussed as a driver in a 996 in the same way as you do in a pre 89, 964 or 993. I love the 996 and 997 - dare i say it early 996 to me look beautiful but as a challenge nothing like the buzz you get from early stuff. I am spoilt though as my first experience of a normally aspirated air cooled is a 1973 RS Touring - nothing gets close in 911 terms IMO.

The air cooled get under your skin in a way that is hard to explain.

I've made up my mind that my next 911 will be a 997 Turbo however I happened on a programme yesterday featuring air cooled Porsches and came over all nostalgic. It's the noise, the smell, the way the rear feels when you pull out of a turning etc etc.

I currently live in Abu Dhabi and am not particularly fussed what I drive over here. The roads are straight, it's always dry and every kilometre there seems to be a speed camera.

A mum picked up her son from school yesterday in a bright yellow Aventador. very flash but I could hardly hear it. I swear my old 993 sounded better at idle and revving. I guess the Lambo would sound awesome + 100 mph.

The best year for the 911 was 2009. It's the year where arguably the best looking 911s were created and there was technology in the cars which complimented the 911 experience.

About to take mine out on January morning duty, she loves it.

depends what you want from your 911 - daily driver the most modern cars are of course superior - weekend special occassions then for me early pre-'73 aircooled or 964/993 RS derivatives - track use, pretty much any GT3.

if i could have just one, prob a GT3, but thats just today. probably feel different tomorrow.

For looks pre-73 but at my age currently I like a 911 to drive like a sports car, rather than a classic car.

For drive my GT3 is great or after that a 964 C2.
In fact if anyone wants to chip JZM down on the mint green one, I'll then do you a straight swap for my GT3.

I'd have said there are just two types of 911 - those with round headlights, and the 'other' ones...

Round every time be that a 3.2 or a 997 or 991 :-)

Yehhh this again, lets see if I can sum things up...

Old cars are: -

1. Cool
2. Depreciation proof
3. Have awesome steering
4. Better handling because they only weigh 10grams
5. Are hard to drive at warp factor 10 and because of this can only be driven by men with massive wangs

the new cars are: -

1. Chavy
2. Lose £3,000,000 as soon as driven off the forecourt
3. Have st steering
4. Weigh more than the sun and because of this have st handling and are way too heavy for any track work
5. Driven by pricks with more money than sense
6. So easy to drive your dog could do it blind folded and because of this driven by men with tiny wangs

I am old enough to remember that exact saying when I was a young man. Difference was, it was then about driving round in bright red aircooled 3.2s ....

If anything, the 3.2 was the car that started this image. I remember well the image of the rich city boy in his red 3.2 Carrera with his mahoosive mobile phone. And braces etc!
