Bit of a pointless post but…..

At the ripe old age of 22 I’ve bitten the bullet and am moving out of home. I have been on the council list for 5ish years and finally been offered a very nice 1 bedroom flat, very close to work and it’s at a reasonable price. Already carpeted and freshly painted so that saves me loads of hassle, the real bonus is the secure underground car park, that means for my clio 172 cup and Suzuki 600 bandit will be kept nice and dry all year round and it provides a place for me to service/work on them any time of day or night.
It’s quite a big financial commitment for me but having done some serious (not man) maths it’s affordable and I will still be able to save a fair chunk each month. I won’t be receiving any benefits so it’s all on my own steam. As it is so close to work my petrol bill will be very little as I will be walking to work, always handy! The girlfriends personal circumstances may or may not change over the next 6 months meaning she may move in too (all legally of course).

So after I officially accept and sign it’s time to sort out the important bits – Gas, Electricity, internet, cooker, fridge freezer, sofa, dining table + chairs, stock the cupboards with essentials and finally have to enter the real world living on a budget.
I, personally, am in a good financial position with no debts or credit cards. So wish me all luck and I may get some pictures posted once I am all moved in.

As this is my first place it would be good to hear other peoples experiences and things I need to think about. I’ve got the parents guiding me along the way to make sure I don’t forget anything essential, but you never know.

Thanks.

A car, a bike and able to save after all of your bills? Why do you get a council house/flat?

You might want to think about whether your new neighbours will appreciate you turning the communal space (undergound garage) into a tinkering spot for your hobby.

In my experience this will not be popular. Communal living is all about considering each other.

Edit: And as above, wtf do you qualify for a council house in the first place?

Good luck man!

Always keep a couple of months "buffer" in your savings account just incase

But enjoy the adult life and having your own place where you can do as you wish and not have to answer to your parents etc...

Also means you can walk around stark bk naked which is always a bonus (only do this in your flat!)

Biggest suggestion would be to try and pick up furniture second hand from gumtree/ebay.

I did this when I moved out last year, however then moving back home 2 months later I was able to move it on for what I paid...and you can keep your cash and upgrade as you save more.

On that note I have a (fake) oak dining table and chairs in the garage that are not much use currently that I haven't had a chance to sell on

They are all paid for. Irrelevant and hardly the most expensive purchases in the world they are both cheap purchases.

Why shouldn't I qualify, I have been honest about my earnings to the council every year when they send the "stay on the list" form through.

Should I only qualify if I don't work, live off benefits and have various ASBOs?

All the best OP it’s a great feeling. The wife and I are in council housing, it’s a great way to have a property and learn what you need to be independent whilst not paying inflated rent for someone else’s mortgage! After a few years you should get a lovely discount on it or you can save to mortgage your own place. Be prepared to be flamed by the PH Powerfully built directors etc for being in social housing just ignore them, they haven’t a clue!

To all those asking why/how he qualifies. You don’t have to be on benefits/pregnant/European/immigrant/poor to qualify, everyone can apply and sit on the list until they are housed. OP was on it for 5 years as he will have been classed as adequately housed. Eventually you get housed as people in higher need are housed or if the people above you turn it down they keep moving down the list until it is filled! Social housing isn’t means tested but based on priority. Honestly the lack of information on it makes for myths that you have to be scum to live in social housing!

I think you're missing the point somewhat... You've apparently left school and stuck yourself straight on the council list, meanwhile bought two cvars and a motorbike outright. What's your rent? About £50 a week?

You can afford your own place. You are depriving someone of somewhere to live. Not everyone is as financially secure as you.
Basically, takes the piss a bit don't you think?

I think you will find that qualifying for a council house is a right and not means tested. I don't live in a council house but find your question quite offensive, some kind of snobbery in fact.

Well I could be honest about my earnings to the council each year, and I don't get a council flat I have to pay everything out of my own pocket. As you should.

If you can't afford to rent a place, stay at home, I'm sure there is a single mother who would be far more suitable for a place than you. (unless you're baiting and massively eligible in another way)

FFS. I have no issue at all with people being in council accommodation, but having a (reasonably flash) car AND a bike while expecting the taxpayer to fund a roof over your head is extracting the urine somewhat. IMO.
