According to their website ( http://www.piperracingcars.co.uk/ ) you can buy one for 28k, thats 4k less than advertised on PH

It is almost 14 years old and would have cost around 50k to build so about 50% depreciation is excellent over that period

Yes, but........that does not take into account the hours of research that went into arriving at the final spec.Did building your own engine work out more economical than buying a crate engine?
I did enjoy the process and the end result which turned a few heads on the American SBC forum. Seems my result of 508hp impressed them.

What I meant was it probably cost less than twice the current asking price (i.e. less than 50% depreciation)....

Visit a forum called chevytalk.org. The main man on there (Grumpyvette) is a mine of info and very supportive. Understanably you will not get much help if you just ask what bits you need to use but put forward your own selection of parts and they will soon tell you where you are going wrong.Also see if you can get hold of 'Desktop Dyno'. I used this software to design my engine. You input all the engine details including flow of the heads, manifolds, stroke, compression, cam profiles etc etc. My completed engine was just a few horses away from the figure DD produced.
If I did it again I would choose a shorter stroke to get the revs up. Also beware the advise from Chevytalk as they are fixated on torque and long stroke engines. It took a while for them to get their heads around a car with a finshed weight around 2200lbs.

what ever route you go, 25k for that car is cheap. ive seen sports at that money but not gtrs.
Age has nothing to do with it.. most cars have only done 15k in mileage so if you have the choice of building and costing 50-65k or buying secondhand this is a massive saving and will deter other to build.

Personally I would, and am still going the new build route, as for some the fun is in the build. I looked at buying a good used one, but only want LS power and those seem to hold value better, I guess because they cost more to build originally

Could be worse - if you bought pretty much any other car for £45-50k back in 2004 it would be worth a lot less than £25k now...sukhjeevan said:

I am well placed to comment on buying a used Ultima GTR and refreshing/modifying it. I did it.
Do not be fooled into thinking it will save you money.
My car had an LS2 and G50-01 and needed a lot of TLC.
By the time I had fitted an LS7 and G50-52 and a few (!) small mods along with a new interior and paint I had spent what it would have cost to build a new car.
The plus point is my car doesn't need cats, or an SVA so I could do almost what I wanted without worrying about some jobsworth looking over my shoulder.
That car is well priced. However, don't buy it thinking you can swap to a new LS for very little cost. Buy it for what it is.
