Converting Shimano wheels to Campag?

Hi all,

I am keen to buy some second hand wheels but the ones I'm after are set for Shimano, I have Campag. What is involved with converting them?

Not much, you'll just need to change the hub over to a Campag one, whilst doing that you may as well use new spokes as they are quite cheap to replace. Would be silly not to replace the rim at the same time. Any bits you have left over you could sell on.

So it involves removing the whole hub. You can't just remove the Shimano bit and replace?

On some hubs you can replace the freehub and swap from Campy to Shim/SRAM compatible.

What wheels/hubs are they?

Another option for you is to look at the Ambrosio cassettes which have Campag spacing for the cogs, but fit onto Shimano splined freehubs. Probably similar cost to buying a new freehub, and having used a few of these myself, can vouch for them working well. This is for 10 speed cassettes. Hope that helps.

The wheels are Marvic Cosmics.

I will try and buy them if I can swap the freehub but if its a new hub then sod it and wait for the right set to come up for sale.

In that case, then getting an Ambrosio cassette will definitely be cheaper than getting a new Mavic freehub. From memory, the cassette is half the price of the freehub. Gives you the ideal opportunity to change your gear ratios as well if needed.

You should be able to change the free hub body. If you can by the same wheel for both campag and shimano. I did the reverse when I changed my shimano group to campag. I had two set of wheels and just replaced the free hubs .

Like my Fulcrums, it worked out cheaper to buy a second hand wheel to get the freehub, rather than to buy the freehub new.

If it is a normal spoked wheel, then a Campag hub swap is the easiest answer.

These are the wheels I have bought, think they should be a marked improvement over the standard Bianchi 'Reparto Corse' wheels.

You could of course just buy a campag shifter for the rear? I'm sure you can find someone selling a shifter on its own after a quick search.

So have one shimano and one campag shifter?
