>>People who own a plug-in electric vehicle as of Wednesday now must pay an additional $100 fee during the car's initial registration or at its annual renewal. Legislators have said such fees are about fairness, since such a car pays no gasoline taxes, which are used for road-building. The new fee is expected to generate $120,000 for the Highway Fund during the 2014-15 fiscal year, according to the state budget.<<

Just thought some might like to know. smile

Sounds fair to me. They could even increase that slightly and reduce fuel duty on gasoline, thereby freeing up income for folks to save for a new electric vehicle in the future! Something for Mr Osborne to consider imho

Very interesting contrast to the "hey, it's green, yay!" attitude here - not surprised given the power the oil companies have over the US economy mind.

Doesn't seem like very much, considering it costs from 2.4-6.9 million dollars to build each mile of highway http://www.railstotrails.org/resources/documents/w...

No doubt when cars were invented, someone came up with a small charge because drivers weren't paying any horse feed taxes...

... and look where we are now. That's how it starts!

I wonder how much of a drain they are to the power grid?

Ah but don't forget that only a tiny tiny percentage of people could use one

But those 4 people that own one when they plug their cars in together can completely black out the entire country

Don't worry as usage increases they will soon increase that fee - they have to recoup their losses - unless they tax electricity more of course, but that won't go down well with the voters
