How do you floss once you have gone pass the teeth and the floss is in place? This is what I have been told:

HYGENIST - up and down - this scrapes food off the teeth.

DENTIST - side to side - if you go up and down then you can push food into the gums. And if you go too high you can cut into the gums and cause more problems.

Who is right? I can see the logic in both their arguments. General evidence on the net seems to agree with the dentist but the hygenist works with a periodontist (a very experienced and expensive one) so I assume she also knows her stuff - and of course works with gum specialists.

On a related note - the Hygenist (and Periodontist) recommended I brush in up strokes not in circles (manual brush). When I queried this they said it was a better way to prevent recession. I have to say I find this way of brushing much easier.

The first one is right but with all respect to Rach and all hygienists, they're not the ones who invented correct flossing.

Where the hell did you get that lot from? biggrin

I brush in circles never used floss.Regular visisting the dentist and good health is more important for your teeth.

The reason I'm saying this, when I had chemo it affected my gums and teeth and my immune system.Iam over 60 still got my own teeth.

Fast cars? rolleyes
Holidays? rolleyes
Trousers? rolleyes

How's it going trying to sort out that third world debt by the way? rolleyes

What? Suggest you stick to a milky drink before bed.

Flossers Make Better Lovers-New Research Shows!

New research from Turkey confirms what dentists have always suspected - men who floss are better in bed. Men in their thirties with severe gum disease were found to be three times more likely to suffer erection problems.
Why would this be? If you have gum disease you have thousands of tiny ulcers in the grooves between your gums and your teeth .Bacteria enter your bloodstream through these minute openings and affect your blood vessels-and poor blood flow means poor erections!

Oral hygiene is important because gum disease is also linked to heart disease, diabetes, low birth weight and pre-term babies and other inflammatory diseases.

In answer - floss up and down.
Brush small circles - but an electric toothbrush is better.

rofl You are hilarious!

Nevertheless, with your attitude towards personal hygiene I would suggest you ask someone how to wipe your arse, you're probably doing it wrong.

I bet you love a 'milky drink' before bed.

I went from a manual brush, to an oral b thing - seemed much better.

Then to a sonicare brush - bloody amazing! It feels like it flosses a bit too.

I was going to recommend the Oral B brushes - a fantastic bit of kit. Buy the £9.99 2xAA ones online to avoid getting yet another charger, they work fine with rechargeable batteries.

I must try those sonic jobbies.

There was a bit of blood at first, the sonic brush makes your head vibrate! However now my mouth feels more 'robust' (it's hard to describe)
