Uh Oh, Squeaking Noise From Engine.

Started the car this morning to head over to the Leven thing and heard what I at first thought was a slipping fanbelt.

It wasn't 'that' loud though, more of a squeak that increases in volume and frequency with rpm. I lifted the bonnet and best I could do was trace it to the front of the engine somewhere.

Any ideas? Water pump maybe?


(Decided against the run to Leven and Mid-Essex meet this evening, just in case. Bugger)

Weter pump is a very likely candidate. Have you a bit of hosepipe you can stick to your ear. Don't leave it there or you'll look silly . Put the other end by the pump and listen down the tube. Don't get it ravelled in the belt!

Spray some WD40 on your pump see if that stops your squeek!!

I've had this in the past and it was after a service and the monkey at the specialists had fitted the serp belt wrongly. I checked it again the photos in the bible and altered it myself and the noise went away...

Belt hasn't been touched recently and the WD40 didn't work.

Off to the garage tomorrow. I can feel a bill coming on.

I had a problem like this. It turned out to be the blanking bit for the power steering.

Does yours have power steering?

If not could be the bearings for the blanking wheel thingy. Don't think it cost too much.

I don't have power steering, no. I wish it were that simple (cheap).

Seems it's the alternator bearings. Had a listen today with a stethoscope thingy (Cue doctor joke, "Big breaths miss" "Yeth, and I'm only thixteen").

Had a new serpentine belt ready and fitted that anyway which oddly enough stopped the noise. Probably temporary (it only makes the noise from cold) so I'll run it with the new belt and see what happens.
