This is not aimed at PH'ers, all of whom are driving gods of course, but -

I was involved in a pr event run at a couple of F1 GP's last year, which was a simulated drag race. Two cars side by side on a pair of dynos, big screen racetrack video, and F1 style starting lights.
Lights go out, both drivers plant the foot, fastest after a certain time is the winner. Open to any punter prepared to queue up for a while. A bit of fun, really.

Cars had flappy paddle auto transmission.
The box wasn't bad in sports mode full auto, but you could get a faster time with the paddles (we had enough "testing" time to work out the best shift revs for each gear wink)

What amazed me was how bad most people were at using the box!
Most short-shifted waaay before peak torque, let alone peak power.
Others just pulled the paddle shift as fast as they could as often as they could - literally!

I would say that less than one in three who used the paddles even came close to auto mode.
And these should have been PH type people - paid to go to the GP then queued up for some time to play drags.

ps I have to hand it to the cars (Infinities). Full bore standing start to about 190 kph every 5 minutes, 10 hours a day for 3 days, no issues.

Judging by the rubbish that people spout about torque figures, I suspect most Pistonheads members don't actually know when to change gear either. hehe

We ran it at Austin the last 2 GP's - I wasn't there, but I've seen the times : not looking much better than Melbourne, percentage wise.

If the people are anything like the people i know who support F1, then they dont give a flying fk about cars or driving.
They simply like F1.
