What the hell is it with stupid warnings, I just noticed on the back of a 20kg bag of peanuts meant for birds that there is a warning saying 'may contain nuts' , well of course it contains f
king nuts, it's a bag of nuts! I'd be pretty pissed off if it didn't contain any, surely if you are that stupid that you are allergic to nuts and then go and eat a large bag of peanuts meant for birds then you would have been removed from the gene pool a long time ago.

This.The legislation now regarding labelling is such that right down to the order in which ingredients are listed can land a manufacturer in serious trouble. Peanuts may not strictly speaking be a nut, but they are an incredibly high risk allergen, as such the generic term "nuts" is used as a cover all. Coconut is not a nuts, nor (in the UK)is it an allergen but still to avoid all doubt some manufacturers are putting the "May contain nuts" label on goods containing Coconut.
In an increasingly litigious society you can hardly blame food producers from erring on the edge of caution. Being in the food technology side of food production I can absolutely confirm it is next to impossible to just keep up with legislation. You now have to pre-empt it due to the way packaging is ordered. From that aspect I think a greater understanding is required before deciding allergen warnings are stupid, even if the thread title can be right about other labels.
The law says 'fish' must be declared as an allergen (some products may contain fish but the species may not be obvious or named - in which case the general desciption of fish can be used to describe the ingredient.
As tuna is in the name/ingredients they probably dont need a seperate warning - infact the seperate warning is voluntary anyway - but I am guessing they have included it as it is standard packaging and some products that are similar will include other allergenes that may not be obvious - so it is easier to retain the packaging style.
the reason they have used the word FISH as opposed to TUNA is because the law refers to FISH and it is easier/makes sense to use the legal wording.
So there is a reason for this 'madness'.
