Retrofitting aircon to 996 GT3s
Discussion
As I understand it aircon was standard on 996 GT3s but deleting aircon was a no-cost option.
Has anyone ever retrofitted aircon to a GT3 and what might it cost? A search on 'tinternet found one reference in a PH thread to a suggested cost of £5k.
It all depends on the price of the car I guess. I am wondering if spending money on fitting an all-new aircon system to an otherwise good car is much different to buying a car with aircon which needs a brakes/diff refresh, for example.
Or put another way, as these cars get older and rarer, perhaps buying a car with a straight, original body and good engine/gearbox becomes paramount and you have to accept spending further money to get to whatever your desired spec is (be that interior, suspension, colour or whatever).

If you are in the south of the UK then IMHO your best bet is to ring Cool It in Dorchester. They are the air con specialists who dealers go to with tricky problems. They retro-fitted aircon to my 968 and it was indistinguishable from the original fitment. I have seen many other Porsches in there for repair or refit - worth a phone call 01305 889843.
In a car like the GT3 I don't believe it to be a big deal.
Its a raw drivers car and very good track day car.
I'd buy a GT3 purely on its history and check out the more important things such as suspension/clutch etc.
The other issues as with all 996'S is the condensers at the front and additional weight which is significant trust me, so much so a non air-cond GT3 would weight the same as an RS.
If i saw a 996 GT3 without AC for around mid 30's with everything done and an air cond car needing bits at £40k
Would even think about it.
In years to come when they are classics which they will be no talk of bloody air-con.

This has to be bargain of the century, would have thought with negotiation there could be a deal to be done.
If its anything like his previous 911's it will be good one, as Mr Crimp has been known to have owned a few.

I take it that you have never driven a GT3, either, ever or, in high temperatures. On track in 30 degrees plus they are a PITA without aircon. Its a raw drivers car and very good track day car.

Everybody's different. Low 30s for me would barely register and hence why aircon in the UK for a track car seems a luxury rather than a necessity.
Pah, that's nothing. Try an hour wearing those Nomex layers with an outside temperature of 45C (and hotter in the cabin).http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dLjNzwEULG8

If you don't need it for a 4 hour stint in a GT3 CUP - with all of the necessary 3 layer nomex plus underwear etc - you sure don't need it pootering around at a track day.
Aircon - Pah!!
I thought it was mandatory on the latest Cup cars?Aircon - Pah!!
On a different note, I see Crimp-a-Length's at it again - finds his "perfect, it's a keeper, I know I've said that before but this time I mean it" car......then puts it up for sale shortly afterwards.

Odd that all seem to have increased in value whilst in his hands too

To be fair to Crimpy, his marriage has come to an abrupt end and he no longer has a garage for his pride and joy.
By, you're a tough cookie Goose!
If that doesn't constitute a genuine sale, I don't know what does.
Obviously you haven't read anything about that, which is fine. But this is P'heads and never shall a "foot in mouth" moment go ignored.

As stated quite nicely via Mark the GT3 is only going through marital feckin issues, you need to do your homework. I seem to recall you mentioning you were peeved at missing out on buying said car thus yourself missing out on a deal and marking up heavily as all dealers do, talk about pot calling the kettle.
I did a deal on the car and the price the car is advertised at is a fair price given its history & condition, so don't really get your point or more importantly care.

Are you saying that the price asked reflects the fact that Crimpy`s car has no A/C? This has to be bargain of the century, would have thought with negotiation there could be a deal to be done.
