Hi
A friend has a '93 car with a '93 private plate on it in the form L222 LLL. The V5 says the plate is non-transferable is this the case? How does he get round it?

There nothing to to get round.! The plate is non-transferable end of.! It stays with the car just like the infamous Moggy Thousand with " 1 AN " also non-transferable.....

Cheers. I just didn't know why a plate that appears to have been bought, rather than standard issue had been made non-transferable?

Generally such instances occur when the car was originally reg'd L222*** then it had another plate applied (but L222*** was not retained) other plate was then taken off the car and the number the car had was reallocated, but DVLA normally make number plates applied after a plate transfer non transferable

I think this goes back years ago to stop people constant acquiring new plates by taking of date less plates and aquiring another every time

So, because a 2nd plate was put over L222 LLL without L222 LLL first being put on retention the owner effectively made L222 LLL a non-transferable number. That's a bit annoying.

I think that the car has had L222 LLL on since first registration even though the first owner bought the number from DVLA rather than having a standard issue reg first.

If that is "defiantly" the case I see no reason for it to be non transferable and should be investigated further but getting it changed won't be an easy task..!argue
