crunchy brakes

Trying to think of the best way to describe this. When I first set off on a journey, my brakes are kind of crunchy. You can hear and feel the pads working on the disc and it makes a grinding sound. This only lasts the first 10 mins or so of the journey and then they are absolutely fine with normal feel and no noise.

First thoughts were worn pads/discs - but no warning light has come on and there seems to be plenty of meet left on both the pads and discs. Looking at the discs they seem to be a bit dirty in the sense that there is almost pad residue on them.

Any ideas what this could be? Could it be rapid heating/cooling causing the pads to stick to the disc - with the cold weather we're having? Problem first occured after an early morning jaunt to North Wales where it was very cold/frosty. Car gets little to no use during the week and parked on a slightly inclined drive - so always get a bit of a stick/release when releasing the handbrake and backing off the drive.

Car is a 2004 996 C4S and is going in for major service at OPC on Friday. It would be great to get a bit of a steer before I get told I need all new discs pads on each corner...

Rust. it will be worse on the inside face that you can't see.

All new discs/pads are not that expensive to purchase or replace anyway as long as you stay away from any OPC.

this. should not last 10 minutes though, just normally the 1st press on the brake pedal after an over night park.

I estimated 10 mins, but really its the initial drive off the estate I live on where the speeds are low and I guess not really putting that much force into the brakes to clear all the surface rust off. Once I've then braked a few times from greater speed it tends to go away.

So hopefully nothing to worry about.

The OPC will be collecting the car from me, so I expect will notice it straight away and flag it to the service guys. Will see what they come back with.

Car is potentially going up for sale soon, so ideally I want to get this sorted so that the first thing a prospective buyer notices isnt the de-rusting of the discs! Any tips other than take the car out for a drive before hand?

Its a non issue every car does it bar cars with Ceramic disks.

It's normal, and as long as the car isn't left for long periods there's nothing to sort out.

Just take it for a quick spin to clean off the discs.

It's happens more when we get rain with wind at the same time, i.e. the moisture is blown into the wheels when the car's standing outside.

And take it for a spin when you wash the car, so the discs get warmed up and the insides and the vents dry out properly before the car is left standing again.
