High speed selvio ... there's an oxymoron if i ever saw one! A must do, but no one will ever do it high speed unless the shut the road!

Crack of dawn is the only way otherwise you just spend your time staring at the fat ar4e of a German motorhome.

It's a must do but there are far more enjoyable (and quieter) roads in that area IMO

I've done it early evening in late June and it was deserted. Probably about 5.30 at the bottom and went at it full on. Only saw a couple of huuuuge Cadilacs at the bottom, an E-type halfway up and a road crew heading home at the top.

Depends on the time you approach Stelvio. The traffic runs in waves, so there is usually a lull between 3-4pm, and then again after about 530pm. Obviously, anything before 9am and it's pretty much empty, but anything betwee 9-10am will be in a middle of the first wave of traffic in the morning.

Reason there are waves is because how people are timing going up Stelvio. Before 9am are the people who were staying in Bormio and Prad. They'll assualt the pass immediately after breakfast. Another wave is before lunch - people aim to have lunch on Stelvio, another wave is straight after lunch (people have places to be), and then there is the late afternoon rush (maybe 4-5pm).

If you want to drive the pass when it's emptyish, choose a Wednesday, if you like Dutch and German RVs, choose a Sunday and Monday, if you like Sunday drivers, choose Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

If you are wondering why Monday is busy, it's because it's the start of peoples holidays, they'll do Stelvio at the beginning of their tour.

Months to avoid, late June and early/mid August. 4th week of August is actually much quieter than you imagine. September onwards and Stelvio is a ghost town.

If you want a truly empty day and are driving - pick a day that it's raining! You will not find a single biker on Stelvio when it's raining.
