Chaps,

Quickie. I am helping a friend to buy a car. The brief is that it is to be a Galaxy, current model, diesel, manual, budget up to around £9k.

I'm fairly clue-y about what a good (as opposed to a bad) second-hand car looks like but I don't know anything about Galaxies. What should I look out for? What goes wrong? Are there any tell-tale signs that show a well-loved car from a dog that's been neglected (apart from the obvious)?

I'm in London, so one of the search criteria will be that it comes from somewhere out of town and is hence a little less likely to have been used in the minicab trade ....

One of the things I am nervous about is buying something that has been clocked. Apart from comparing mileages at services and MOT's, is there anything I can do?

The friend in question is a long-standing and very good one, and I am happy to put some effort in to find him a good car that will serve him well.

All advice welcomed - thanks.

Oli.

Don't buy it in black.

Everyone will think you work for Addy Lee.

He should get a divorce and buy an MX5, he'll enjoy it more /thread

(treat it like any second hand car, but make sure all seats are present and latch securely)

How do you know that you are about to be cut up on the road?
The black Galaxy will have Addison Lee on the back window.

Every week with without fail, at least one of those gits does attempts some dangerous manoeuvre on my front quarter.

It beggars belief that one company can employ so many feckwit dangerous drivers.

Or maybe 99% of them are exemplary and I meet the same git each time ( in a different car)

If it has a weird rattling noise round the engine, its probably a £20 intake pipe.

Rear trailing arm bushes can fail.

Turbo vanes can stick - expensive, look for any fluttering under acceleration.

The seats in ours water mark easily

Other than that, seem pretty robust.
