Civic Type R EP3 for £3500 realistic?
Discussion
A friend of mine has decided after a year of driving a more senior citizen style Honda Civic, that he fancies a Type R. I went with him to look at a couple this weekend in the price range mentioned in the subject but was rather horrified at the overall condition of the cars we saw. Admittedly we did only see two but between them I saw oil leaks, bad paintwork repairs, rust, shagged gearbox and / or clutch, and really worn out / tatty interiors. I appreciate that many Type R's will have been well used and abused but is £3500 a realistic price for a decent, honest, Civic Type R?
Thanks.
Thanks.

I've been watching the prices on EP3's for a while now and £3.5k is a healthy budget for one. You may not be able to get hold of a face lifted version with sub 100k miles but you won't be far off.
The big money is in the last edition cars.
Good luck in your search
My friend isn't too fussy about facelift, or anything like that - he just wants a good, honest, straight car. Reassured to hear the budget is realistic - just a bit difficult as he's not that mechanically minded so ideally wants me to go and see cars with him.. and it's just trying to find times when we're both free. Doesn't help with the dark nights this time of year as we could probably get a few more mid-week viewings in! The big money is in the last edition cars.

Try the for sale ads on there also, he might need to post a few times to view them but there's usually the better cars and more honest descriptions on the owners forums than here or Auto Trader for example.

Funnily enough I did check those forums but couldn't see classifieds so moved on.. didn't realise you needed to be registered and to have made a few posts to view them. I'll send them over his way! Cheers. www.typerowners.co.uk

My sister bought her 2001 EP3 type r for £3150 six months ago. Milano red with 67,000 miles on. It didn't have a full service history but there was a lot of it and you could tell the guy selling it had looked after it well.
We did have to look at a few rough ones though. Lots of crash repaired or badly modified/abused examples out there. I basically had to check all the websites daily for her and when this one popped up we were there within half hour to look it at and left a deposit. His phone was ringing the whole time we were there with people asking about the car. They are out there you just need to keep searching!

Looks like he may have found one thankfully. What got him interested in Type R's originally is a friend of his at work owns one which has been fastidiously looked after. He said he couldn't believe how good that car felt when he test drove it, vs the one that we drove on the weekend.
Well it sounds like the friend at work has agreed to sell the car to him, presumably within his budget. I know it's seen as a fatal error selling cars to friends so be interesting to see how it all pans out... but good news he's got one lined up at least and we don't have to go and look at any more!
