the car knows how much fuel has been used to calculate the mpg, but i've yet to see a car with a fuel used display, this would probably be one of the most useful displays, so why don't they do it?

My 2006 Astra has this function - there's two trip meters each of which display distance, average speed, quantity of fuel used and average fuel consumption. If my car has it, and it's no bleeding-edge S-Class, surely others must. As for being actually useful? Not so much.

I'm pretty much only ever interested in range, sometimes MPG.

It may be useful for car geeks, but for the rest of the car buying population, it's irrelevant.

Imagine getting home from work and telling your wife that on your way home you used 2.7 litres of fuel.

On the Pug 406 HDi trip computer I like the indication of remaining range, and the average mpg achieved. The indication of current mpg is not very helpful as it jumps all over the place in response to quite small changes of throttle opening. Miles covered since reset (I can get that from the trip odometer), and average speed since reset, are not of much interest to me.

I do like the system whereby you can have two average mpg indications: for example, one from when you last refuelled, and another one for the current journey. Some cars have that system, but unfortunately our 406 doesn't.

All 2005-09 Mustangs have it as far as I know, mine certainly does, sure it reads in US gallons but it’s there never the less and its usually fairly accurate too.

As above, it's not really relevant to the general motoring population. That said, I've seen it in most cars I've driven. Even if it doesn't appear in the display menu, there's a good chance that the car's OBC still has the functionality: You could access some 'hidden' functions on my old M3 by pressing certain buttons together or in a specific order, none of which were documented in the owner's manual. Might be worth a bit of research if you're interested in it that much.

I don't have to imagine. I do!

What do you mean she's complaining there's not enough excitement in our marriage?

To take it to the next level I don't understand why you can't put in the price per litre and then and the end of every trip, it come up with a message.....''This journey has cost £XXX"

I think that would make people think!

In a convoluted way my Garmin satnav does that. You enter the average MPG the car is getting, and at the end of every journey it tells you the fuel cost.

It does in a Prius and quiet accurate as well.
