Apparently from October 2014 private sellers won't be able to sell their cars without first cashing in the RFL with the DVLA.

That could be a pain for both the buyer and a seller.

Sounds good as we'll no longer have tax discs and its a good way to make sure the new owner has insurance as well.

But unless you sell the car at the end of the month you will lose out on any unused tax. Likewise if you buy a car a week before the end of the month I bet you will have to pay for a months tax to cover the remaining week in the month.

Also what if you go and buy a car after post office opening hours, hopefully taxing online will be instant but I doubt it.

I can't see why doing it online wouldn't be instant, certainly no slower than the post office.

so the guy selling needs use of it until I pick it up, I need use of there after.

if for any reason we don't have web access, or the system is down at the time of handover, how can he legally sell it? or I legally drive it home?

More money for dvla. I sell my car mid month and lose that months tax. The new buyer will then be charged for that period also and not from the start of the next month. Ker Ching dvla.

I can see more privately sold cars been driven for a few days without road tax, to get a whole month's worth of road tax.

Another pointless ballache for the poor sods trying to sell their cars privately.

I'm sure that this and the constant insurance rule are almost entirely to boost tax revenue by making more people part-ex their cars...

The same thought that went through my head when I saw what they were doing. Clearly a way to raise more revenue.

From the OP's link,

"This could encourage unscrupulous sellers to claim that their vehicles have (say) eleven months tax remaining when they only have two."

Eh? How would that work then?

"Tax runs out in November"
"No it doesn't, it says March on the tax disc"
vs
"Tax runs out in November"
"You look honest and I have no way of checking, that must be true"

Does the DVLA online vehicle check tell you this? I vaguely remember it tells you whether currently taxed but maybe not the expiry. Would be a useful change if it doesn't already.

IIRC It will state something like Pending renewal, only if you are looking at a vehicle with less than a month VED remaining

In the US you have to pay sales tax even on second hand car purchases. Do you think this is a way of bringing it in in the UK?

It's called VAT here. Dealer pays it on the difference between what he paid for the car and what he sells it for - or something like that.

VAT is only paid by dealers int he UK. In the US ALL car sales INCLUDING private ones are subject to sales tax. When you buy a car you have to register the purchase and pay the tax on the whole price.

It's a bit annoying but surely it'll be like insurance is now?

Assuming they'll let 2 people tax a car...

New person agrees to buy, sorts out tax and insurance.

Old owner cancels 'their' tax once new owner has taken car.

I wonder if the registered keeper will get updated at the same time?
