Most of us visit the dentist regularly and some companies have to pay for us to have our eyesight checked but what about your hearing? I'm a deaf old bugger these days and not ashamed to admit it, although I did at first.
After reading various threads about the more expensive audio and Home theatre systems I'm curious about the general level of hearing in the PH throng.

I can't hear if there is background noise. I can hear really quiet stuff in quiet places, but in a noisy place like a busy pub I can't hear others talking clearly even when most people can.
Not bothered by it really, it's not getting worse & most people aren't worth listening too anyway.
te!Never. However my issues aren't really of a hearing nature. My Aspie tendencies mean that the noise of a group of people speaking en masse means that all I "hear" is, well, noise.
Muddle aside, if I concentrate I can pick out an individual on the far side of the room, so I'd suggest my ears work fine, it's just the bit which processes the sounds is FUBAR.
Still, musn't grumble. Mainly because none of these deafos would hear me anyway...

I had to have a hearing test annually, due to working in a factory.
The Occupational nurse told me that my hearing was perfect, and that she was glad she hadn't been talking about me on the other side of the factory (intimating I would have been able to hear her!)
However, as someone above said, if there is background noise, I struggle to hear what the person next to me is saying. When I was at school, I always had a lot of problems with my hearing, and the doctors then said I only had 70% hearing in one ear, and it would never get any better. However, each of my hearing tests over the 6 years I was at the factory showed I had perfect hearing in both ears.
I also have my music turned up loud, but more because that is how rock music should be played, rather than because I cannot hear it.
My youngest daughter has the same problem as me, in that she cant hear things if there is a lot of background noise.
My eldest is neurologically deaf in one ear. She cannot hear anything on one side, but there is nothing physically wrong with her hearing, and scans and tests show that her brain is receiving the signals, but then ignoring them.

I had mine tested at my optician recently, it's a free service. Headphones on and various frequencies played into each ear. I could hear them all though the volume seemed to vary slightly - I'm happy with that.
The volume aspect is part of the test. Yeah my hearing is screwed bigtime.

I blame too many (80's) F1 races, gigs and raves. Works for me. Why get tested for something that already works to my own advantage? Hell, I see people using ignorance to their own advantage all the time. There's got to be a bit of payback...

Exactly the same here. Apparently this is a bona fide definition of deafness... and it seriously hampered my 20'syo pulling technique! I literally learned to lip-read and often look at peoples' mouths when in normal conversation. Seems like a bad habit, but I blame modern life.
