Hello, I am looking for some advice on buying a used Jaguar XKR Supercharged.

I have looked at detailed guides on what to look for when buying these cars, and I have test driven both the 4.2 XK and 4.2 XKR and I am quite convinced that its the R I want to go for. Ideally I want to spend below £20k but can go a bit above that, hence the reason I am not even thinking about the newer 5.0

Has anyone dealt with Stratstone who sell a lot of these? I have never had any dealings, but heard bad reports. Are there any other highly recommended dealers worth going to?

There are rumours that the current model X150 is due to be replaced or phased out, and along with the arrival of the F type coupe, I am wondering if it would pay to wait a few months. I read in another thread that Jag are giving massive discounts on new XK/R's and just wondering if any of that will filter down into the used market.

Forgive me if these seem like daft questions, I have never bought a car from a dealership before, however I will be aiming to buy outright with no finance or hp, are there any good deals to be had in the used market? cheers

I was in basically the same boat last summer. I bought a 2008 XKR with about 72k on the clock in July.

Re. Stratstones, they sell official Jaguar Approved-Used cars as well as ones not through the Jaguar AUC scheme but don't always make it obvious which are which. If it is an AUC it'll be on the Jaguar website. Non-AUC cars may well be fine but make sure you know what you're getting.

Ideally you want an approved-used car with the full 12-month Approved warranty. Older cars (over 5 years) or ones with higher mileage will be offered with a 3-month "Select" warranty which is not as comprehensive and obviously doesn't last as long.

The full AUC experience with the 12-month Approved warranty was a must for me and I'm glad I held out for a car with the right spec, colours, price and warranty because I had cause to use it and if I'd not had warranty then I'd have had £2500 bill. You could look at independent dealers and pay less for the car but I'd advise factoring in either a decent slush fund per year or a good aftermarket warranty.

As for dealers, I would say be prepared to travel a bit for the right car and don't place too much importance on the dealer. I heard and read lots of things like "Jaguar dealers are all great, brilliant customer service" etc. but my experience between the one I bought my car from and the local one I use for work and servicing hasn't really been any better than any other garage or dealer I've bought cars from. It may be different if you're spending nearly £100k on a brand new XKR-S (I'd bloody hope so anyway!) and your mileage may vary in any case.

I've just had a quick look on the Jag AUC site and there aren't any below £20k but there's a nice-looking black one with black interior, 08 plate at Guy Salmon in Maidstone with 67k on the clock at £21,850. I think that one's been there a little while now (I've been keeping an eye on prices since I got mine).

Take your time, new ones appear on the AUC site and on Autotrader every few days or so. I was pretty fussy with spec and colours but I got what I wanted after really only a couple of months or so. Have fun smile

They're starting to look like good value now. There are some very cheap none supercharged cars around, but I'd be the same, holding out for the R! yes

Thanks for the advice, as you suggest I would rather get the Jaguar AUC warranty too. But have found a car which is a rare colour (Emerald fire) with 73k for £19k(ish) at Stratstone. So in a bit of a predicament!

In the process of speaking to them to see if I can get a deal including 12 month warranty. Not holding out a lot of hope though and think that I will end up looking in the approved used for a lower mileage one.

Have you considered an early 5.0 non supercharged? I had close to the same budget as you and considered the matter for months - as is my want :-). In the end it seemed to me that an early 5.0 was the best deal, I paid 23K for mine with 74000 miles on and it drives like new and is absolutely FANTASTIC I just adore it, for me it has just the right blend of power and comfort and is streets ahead of the 4.2.

Just to balance the Jaguar warranty question I bought a low mileage 57 plate XKR convertible from a well respected independent three years ago and it's been faultless. I guess if you are going for a slightly higher mileage car then the warranty is a consideration.

I'm not aware of any particular faults that you need to be aware of but do join the Jaguar allegiance club, gives you 20% off labour and parts at main dealers, discounted MOT's and invites to special events.

managed to get an agreement that the car will come with 12 months "Jaguar Approved Warranty" in with the price, anyone able to advise on weather this is more or less comprehensive than the 'select warranty'.

Going to look over it on Friday, Cant wait!

Approved warranty is the better one so that's good. Select covers fewer things and I think only lasts for 3 months. Maybe the dealer leaves the approved warranty out unless asked to try and maximise profits...

Good luck!

My S-Type 4.2 V8SE was a JMD demo car and came with Jaguar's three year warranty. It ran out after three years and I delved deeply into the pros and cons of paying to extend the warranty, purchasing an independent warranty, or risking none at all. I went for the extension to the Jaguar warranty and did so for as many years as I could...up to 8 years when the car got to 100,000 miles. Well worth it not only for the peace of mind but it is really comprehensive. I still have the car now with no warranty so fingers crossed!

I bought the XKR in the end, after taking a look it all seems spot on. Can't wait to get hold of it now.

Just shopping about for insurance now. Probably have a few daft questions once I have it as I have never owned any car with this much tech!

Congrats smile be sure and post a few pics. Tech-wise, it's all pretty straightforward and if you're like me you'll find yourself not using half of it anyway. How long do you have to wait?

Oh, ETA - try Privilege for insurance, I pay £186 fully comp with protected NCB and legal cover.

I shopped about a bit and cheapest so far is Admiral @ £760ish, which given my age I think is pretty good.

What are these like in the wet? obviously I read reviews and test drove a couple, but this is the first one I have owned. Obviously I will be taking my time and leaving the traction control on in crap weather, but any heads up on how careful you have to be? reason I ask is it looks like its going to be terrible weather when I have to collect it.

£760 seems quite high? How old are you and how long have you held your licence? I'm 36 and had only been driving nearly 5 years when I got mine, I paid £186 fully comp with protected NCB for mine.

Wet handling, will depend a lot on the tyres. Mine has 20" rims, 285/30/20 at the back and 255/35/20 in front. Tyres are Pirelli winters. It can be a bit frisky but generally you have to poke it a bit to make it break away. It's not undriveable by any means but as you say just take it easy until you get to know it a bit.

Beautiful car that in any case smile Love that colour - I'd have had one that colour but my wife veto'd that...

Have had my licence 8 years and got full no claims discount, 1 sp30 though, I just turned 25 which has actually halved what I would have paid, had I bought one last year.

Those are only the 19" rims, cant recall tyres but I checked and they were good branded ones. Pretty sure they were continental or Pirelli.

How often are you changing the oil in your car? and what do you use?

Ah that'll be it then, your age will count against you. Having said that, that's probably still not bad for the age you are!

Have you collected it yet?

Oil-wise, I haven't had to do this yet, I've only had mine since July. I'd just go with whatever the dealer recommends personally.

ah fair enough, main reason I asked is the last service was a few months back, around 3000 miles ago, some cars I have owned have required oil change every 5k, not sure on the Jag.

Not yet collection is sorted for tomorrow, all being well - Cant wait!!

Just renewed my membership on xkec, also going to look into that Jaguar allegiance club mentioned above.

Ah ok, I think the service intervals are 10k/1 year, whichever comes soonest. The log book tells you.

Enjoy yourself tomorrow!

jaguarforum.co.uk is pretty good, as is the more US-centric jaguarforums.com. Never heard of the Jaguar allegiance thing, will look that up. I've just joined the Jaguar Enthusiasts Club too.

I've been in the Jaguar A;liegince scheme with my S-Type for several years. It's free. Price are discounted by, I think, 10%, so worthwhile if you're using a JMD.
