Hi,
It will soon be time to be purchasing my first car :-) and I was wondering what you guys think. My current shortlist is an MG ZR(1.4) and a Triumph Herald. The ZR because it is practical and not too boy racer/ricer like and the Herald because it would teach me about cars and just be downright cool smile both have their downsides though.

What do you think of those and do you have any suggestions, only rules are must be cheapish to buy and run and not make me look a tt smile (anyone who suggests a corsa/saxo/micra/ka/clio/astra will be shot)

Whatever you get, you're sure to have an interesting journey through car ownership judging by that post.

Herald btw. ;-)

my first car was a 1995 mini 1.3i. Was a right hoot to drive could throw it down B roads and was very cheap and easy to keep going.

My Dad had a Herald which makes them cool as fk in my eyes.

I've never heard anybody say they want a ZR because they're subtle, that is a joke right?

I did look at Mini's but I thought them a bit overpriced for what they are and my Dad deterred me away due to the fact that if I crashed, i'd die

Not entirely, the young drivers around here all have slammed corsas with 10 inch backboxes and 20 million watts of subs in the boot, so in comparison a ZR seems restrained

£1800 tops. Preferably less and less than 1458cc(I think) for taxing

Get an old Volvo. Cheap, comfy, quick(ish) and not too bad to insure

Any models in particular? Only Volvo that sticks in my mind is the P1800 :-)

Hardly old buy my standards smile unfortunately the engines are just too large for tax and insurance for a 17 year old

My mrs brought a Suzuki Swift she's happy with it. She didn't want a corsa but wanted sporty look. Tbh it's a good car. She's happy with it anyway

Suzuki Swift reminds me of my own first car, a 1962 Mini Minor 850.

Zr will almost definitely cost you a head gasket at one point.......the herald would be a better choice although that could also potential cost as well

Id have the herald

My Dad and I bought a scrapper Mini and restored it, we paid three hundred quid for it in August 2007 (he picked it up whilst I was at the Leeds Festival IIRC) and I simply cannot believe how their values have climbed since then, he keeps the car as he has a bigger garage to pile crap in than me, but I'd never sell it. cloud9

Don't crash then, wink
