So I've been looking at Honda Preludes and this one has up for sale on the forum since October 2013, with an initial price of £2,250.

Three months later, it's dropped to £1500 so I am suspicious as to why it's taking so long to sell! It seems to be in good condition, with the only advisory in the MOT being the front ARB droplinks failing or something along those lines. Is it because it's a Jap import?

I have offered the seller £1400, will see if he accepts and if he does, I'll be collecting it in a couple of weeks (assuming it's all as advertised when I arrive to collect).

It was bought for a grand and tidied, according to the owner.

That should tell you all you need to know.

£2250 was mental money for one possibly needing a gearbox rebuild.

ad says said:
No P/X's or Swaps, looking for a cash sale only. £1500 FINAL PRICE no offers.
Might not be accepting it that offer.
Honestly it looks like a good car and the ad is very well written. Not sure about the 5th gear crunch and the odd thing about the fog lights and spoiler being removed, but these seem minor.

Better than this one!

Just put a £250 deposit on the car and will be collecting next weekend! Hopefully it won't present me with any major problems, will create a thread in Readers' Cars at some point.

If there is a gearbox issue, drain the oil (measure how much comes out too) and see if there are any metal bits in there, might give you an indication of impending doom. Also, you'll know if the fluid level was low (like i found with my car)

Looks good! Kind of wish I'd seen it as I've been thinking about getting another! I wouldn't worry too much about the 5th gear 'crunch' it's a common thing to happen and as he said in the ad, its only when changing at high rev's.

Have you got any plans for it or are you keeping it pretty standard?

Did you have a 5th Gen previously?

Intention is to keep it standard for now except for red Honda badges on the front and rear, change the gearbox oil to the one the seller recommended and change the front ARB droplinks as they were an advisory on the last MOT.

Never driven a car with VTEC before and it looks like it would be a good upgrade to my Celica 2.0 GT which I sold recently, can't wait to collect it now!

Yeah, I had a '99 BB8 for almost 3 years, bought it with 116K on the clock and had it until it was just over 150K, and it probably still had a fair few miles left in it.
I only did a couple of things to mine, exhaust, coilovers, Accord Type R brakes with braided lines, and JDM style ebay fogs (originals go for quite a lot!)
The only thing to really keep an eye on is the oil, they're known for using a little bit, but as they age they can start to use a bit more(up to 1L every 1K miles is "normal" apparently, mine probably used half of that).
I think Amsoil is supposed to be one of the higher rated gearbox oils, I've got a few litres sitting at home as I was planning to do mine.

You'll enjoy VTEC, it can be quite addictive!
