After thorough cleaning with Jizer and Auto Glym engine cleaner, I then follow up with Wonder Wheels with a stiff brush and much agitation, make sure you nuetralize with a mild alkaline solution afterwards then wash clean. Really stubborn stuff gets the Phosphoric acid treatment with much care... have cleaned 150+ ally blocks this way..

Thanks for your help folks its amazing how grubby some engines look after a few years use.

If you are having it blasted by any sort of media, be sure that it is thoroughly cleaned afterwards, particularly any oil ways as the blast media is very abrasive, any particles adhering to the surface will soon ruin bearings etc.

Hard work, living in Asia you can get some fabulous cleaners, my mechanic has some great stuff that cleans up engines like new, paint on wash off, but they are banned in the UK for a reason, if you see what they do when they are left oon two long you don't want to be near them, stick to hard work gunk and wonder wheel type products.

Why would he want to paint it?

Wheel cleaner is the best stuff I have found for corroded alloy castings, but it does need to be washed off very thoroughly.
