It looks like I’m going to be mostly spent out on the purchases of a new decat y piece, new roof, new carpets and the precats being taken out so I am going to have to limit spend on performance improvements.

Looking at 2 options and I ‘think’ one is a no go but would like to check.

Will a 45mm ported inlet manifold fit standard 450 heads or is the inlet port too big for the cylinder heads inlet? If it does fit, I could go with the Plenum, Inlet Manifold and Trumpets here:
http://www.v8developments.co.uk/products/induction...
This will set up me up for Stage III/IV heads in the future.

If the inlet manifold won’t fit, is the trumpets on their own a worthwhile investment (or the ACT equivilents)?

Comments most welcome on the above.

I know I should get on the phone and just ask them direct but I’m at work and can’t call.

PS – My car is a standard 450, rebuilt last year and with a Stealth cam and soon to be fully decatted exhaust.

There's a few on here with 450's that have had ported inlet manifolds. I think the difference in the heads is that the 500 heads had bigger valves and some porting improvements. I think the porting mainly refers to the shape and size of the port past the initial inlet port opening.

However, as many have pointed out, all these induction mods are an improvement, but you're still stuck with the 5AM, which remains the choke point in the system. Perhaps you could look at getting a 20AM piggy-backed (speak to Blitz) or consider going the MS route. You could save money towards this by getting an old standard Y-piece and cutting the cat out and doing the pre-cats yourself. I know Blitz said that the 5AM becomes a restriction around the 300bhp point and looking at what you're intending on doing, it looks as if you're going that way with stage 3 heads etc.

Just a few thoughts.

Edited to say: you could also do your own trumpets and purchase the intake manifold only... or take it down to a local machine shop. More money saved.

To put this in context - at the time I upgraded, I had a 450 with TVR 450BV heads (BVs but little/no porting), Emerald (so no MAF restriction), and JP Exhausts SS manifolds & Y piece.

The main bottleneck as I saw it was the OE intake manifold, trumpets and plenum.

Therefore bought 45mm inlet manifold, and 72mm plenum with aluminium trumpets, at fairly reasonable expense plus fitting and remapping costs.

Gained 10ft lbs and 10BHP.

If you are looking for immediate gains, you may find you are disappointed - however, as you state, it is most likely that you will need to upgrade them at the time of fitting ported heads, otherwise the OE items may well become the bottlenect and limit any gains from the new heads...

In short - you will most likely need them to get the most from the new heads you are looking at, but they may not provide much gain before that, as the heads themselves may well be the main bottleneck in your current setup (rather than the manifold/trumpets/plenum combo).

HTH,

Dom

Karl, I've got a standard Y piece that's been decatted sitting in the garage if you want to look at that route first, would give you that decat sound and see if you like it before going the whole hog. Would also allow you to spend money on the other things you desire! If interested let me know, we don't live far apart as you know.

Cheers, Rob

Thanks Bob but Y Piece already bought wink

I really should wait until I can do the whole stage 4 and inlet at the same time but I just feel the need to fiddle all the time.

It's being fitted start of Feb and the precats are coming out at the same time.

Suspension and brakes have already been done.

I've got the stealth cam already fitted from last year so I guess breathing (heads and inlet) are the next step. The heads are a bit too much at the moment with all the other costs going on so some inlet mods are my next thought.....

I used to have disposable income before I bought a TVR...... smile

That is the ultimate but I think the wife might notice that from my bank account.

The smaller stuff I can pass off on boy £/girl £ thing.

She's still not happy about the engine rebuild and new camshaft costing £1,000 last year...... wink

Your links are broken Daz, but I am assuming you are referring to the various Griff 500 parts for sale at drug induced prices in the classifieds?
