A very contrasting what future car thread!
Discussion
Evening all,
My plans have been thrown into disarray again regarding my next vehicular move. Basically, my garage currently consists of a Land Rover Disco 2, and a Land Rover Series 3. The D2 is a jack of all trades - being my daily barge, occasional off roader and frequent large load/heavy duty towing lugger. The Series 3 is currently off the road and needs a massive overhaul, ideally a body-off rebuild, before it goes back on the road again. This will require several K to do properly, not to mention a lot of time to either do it myself, or give to a restorers on a "cheap rate if you fit it in around urgent jobs" basis. So, it's not going to be a quick process especially given the money will have to come from somewhere too.
Now whatever happens, at all times I need to retain a 4WD offroad tow vehicle in my arsenal due to various commitments.
The intial idea was that I would keep my discovery 2 for the forseeable future, certainly many years to come, as it is such a capable everyday drive, and is economical enough that there is no rush to rebuild the Series and chop in the D2 for something less thirsty once I start a proper work commute.
However, this changed slightly when looking at the prices of L322 Range Rover, in 3.0 BMW-TD6 flavour. They currently hover around £8-9k for one that hasnt done moon mileage or been used by an aspiring rapper/drug dealer. I reckon that, given 1 or 2 years, they will be down in price to D2 levels (£5-6k) as more L405 Range Rooneys hit the used market. Thus, another option opened up of keeping the D2 relatively standard (ditching the planned offroad armour mods) and in good condition, then doing a P/X + ~£1.5k deal for an RR. So, I still retain the $WD towcar, only with an extra dollop of luxury, more refinement, and similar economy. Ok, so servicing will be more and I'm a grand down on the Series fund, but its worth it for an RR.
Now, here comes the spanner in the works. Whilst looking at Rangies online, I noticed that for the same circa £9k, one can get a nice Chim or even a leggy/Cerb. this temptation is just too good to resist but it will come at a heavy cost. I dont see them depreciating into my range, so an extra £3 or £4k would have to be saved, or drummed up pronto from some sort of extra work. Plus, losing the D2 for a sports car daily means the Series would immediately have to be rebuilt for the occasional tuff stuff duties, at expensive rates too. It would be a much bigger financial commitment but I would be willing to scarifice for it 9maybe even sell some other toys) if it meant having a Cerb at age 23 or 24 (I'm nudging 22 currently). I even ran an insurance quote to try and put me off, thinking it would no doubt be a billion quid for a 22 yo with 4 years NCD and a slightly ghetto postcode (my little village falls under the nearest town). But no.... £1000 fully comp on a Cerb 4.2, which is only £300 more than I pay for the D2!
So as you can see, I have a dilemma. Head says RR all the way, but heart is screaming TVR! What are your thoughts?

If you can barely afford a Cerb, you can't afford to run one. See my profile.
Fair point. I gather the AJP engines are quite bork-prone. What about a Chim instead? Tried and trusty RV8, and much nicer examples within the same price bracket.doogz said:
The BMW diesel L322 was awful. Buy the 4.4 if you have to have one.
Thought you were buying a Russian truck?
The 4.4 TDV8 is still miles too expensive though. I thought the TD6 was fairly bulletproof, if a bit underpowered (no change from the TD5 D2 in terms of lightning pace then)Thought you were buying a Russian truck?
As for mil trucks, they are a pipe dream for when I have a C licence and own a storage barn
It needs to be economical though, Id be looking for 25-27 mpg which I know the diesel can do, what's the petrol equivent on LPG? Also, aren't those V8s the BMW motors that had all the vanos issues?
(Before someone points out that a Chim isn't economical either, I gather they can be teased up to about 23 or so with a careful right foot, which is acceptable to me due to the tradeoff in driving enjoyment)
