I had seen the news about the demise of the paper disc but didn't realise this would be a side effect.

Furthermore, motorists should not be concerned about forgetting to renew. They will, after all, still receive reminders through the post
Issued by DVLA no doubt
What percentage 'lost in post' followed by fine?

DVLA. Car taxing. Change of rules. That'll be nice.

I don't see the issue;

1) buy car privately, excuse mr buyer can I use your computer to tax my car/ or you tax it online before you drive away/over the phone
2) if they are getting rid of the paper tax disc you won't need to send nothing back just so it online.

My last four cars have come from mainland UK. I fly over, do the deal, drive/sail home and then register it at the tax office when I get a chance with the New Keeper's slip. It's not on the DVANI system so it can't be taxed with them over the phone or online.

So I'll have to drive home with no tax or have it transported and stored somewhere off the road until I can get into the tax office.

and its an easy way for the DVLA to make more money.

Every time a car gets sold the DVLA will get double the tax for that month.

The seller can only claim back any full remaining months, and the buyer has to buy a part month.

people will try to hold off sales until the very moment their tax runs out

will make buying and selling private a real headache

Just abolish the whole system completely!

Add a penny to fuel and be done with it - administering the system (depending on which reports you read) costs as much or nearly as much as it generates; and for what?

You cant drive a car without fuel, so just use that system. f course this puts a load of people in DVLA out of a job, so I guess they wont do it.

Wouldn't be so bad if tax refunds were done by days remaining instead of whole months remaining!

Also, you pay more if you only purchase 6 months or the new pay monthly direct debit.. you won't see that difference back in your pocket either.

I can kind of understand the theory behind it as with no disc showing, I could easily tell you the car you are about to buy has 9 months tax when in fact it has none. But I agree they will have thought this out as a way to make more money.

They will never do this as its too sensible and much fairer.
Due to the mileage difference, my zero excise rated focus was putting out more co2 than my C63, which cost 475 quid to tax. Not exactly fair.

sorry mr buyer but my 'puter isn't working at the moment (or indeed what about the concern that the seller has a key-logging program installed on his 'puter?)... you're out of 3g/4g signal so you can't use your mobli... this will cause a few more issues than anticipated I suspect.

1-2p on petrol or do what they do in the US and Germany IIRC and get new plates every year?
