Is there a quick disconnect steering hit that works well for the ultima?

I've fitted a couple of types now. The flat low profile ones (usually cheaper) have too much play (for me anyway) and feel a little "under engineered" some with key locks have a cast base which I found particularly nasty. machined example (I think) here:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/THIN-SNAP-OFF-QUICK-RELE...

This is the type that I ended up with, there is no discernible play, the contact area from boss to shaft is splined making good contact and feel, downside is the unit takes up more room and moves the steering wheel further towards the driver, but it is where I found the best set up for me, also they are not cheap!! beware of the lesser known makes, I had one and the base material started to spall and deform after a while.
Go for Lifeline, OMP Sparco etc. IMO.

I used a low profile one as well at first as wanted to keep the steering wheel close to its original position, after one track day there was loads of play in it so had to be thrown away, settled on one from demon tweaks, think it was the rally one but was the one with a yellow release anyway, this could be mounted direct to the steering column plate by removing the hub and drilling the plate, thus putting the steering wheel in its original position. this was the only quality quick release that I could find that didn't require cutting and welding the steering column.
The cost was around £200 for the bits.

Hope this helps karl.

Ah yes thanks macgtech, it was the touring car one that I used from demon tweeks, looks very similar to the one that you use but it can be bolted on instead of welding, suspect welding on would be better but both do the job though so personal choice.

That looks a perfect choice IMO. Spline shaft (no play) and looks solid build.

Looking more closely, I think this would fit perfectly in place of the steering crush zone, otherwise the wheel could be too close for comfort to the chest with the crush zone and removable mechanism together.

Yes definitely. The crush boss is quite big, so yes if going with a QR boss it deffo has to go in order to maintain a comfortable seating position (which is already a bit of a challenge in an Ult!). I do have one of the slimline snap-off bosses in the garage, but I never got round to fitting it.... based on the feedback above, I'm glad I haven't wasted the time trying it out!

I'm off to DT to just buy a touring car one and be done with it. It looks slimmer than the crush boss too, so it might help the driving position a little too.

Mark, did you get your steering column extended by the Factory to make room for the indicator and light command stems? How much was it extended? 5cm approx? That's the extension which was done on mine. Just checking and with what I have in mind attached on the end, I don't want to end up looking like a granny driving with poor eyesight laugh

Yes, the factory did the extension. I think it was about 70mm from memory.

If you look at the one I flagged:
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Lifeline-Bolt-On-Race-Ra...
it has a recessed plate which the splined shaft is attached to allowing it to sit inside the crush zone a little way, this way you keep some of the crush zone movement and move the wheel further from the driver (though not as far as the demon tweaks version with no crush zone at all).

waste of time, energy, and money. I have had an NRG brand quick disconnect since the get go and the only time I use it is if I need to go under the dash. For that I would just unbolt the wheel. Lee

Horses for courses..... for a Can Am with no roof, it's a fantastic anti-theft deterrent! It'll also help entry / exit if you're *ahem* a little big-boned ;-)

i should also have said that we have had two of them so far and the quality of both of them has been fine. it is also ohh so close to fitting on the proper SPA ones that are three times the price (a mate has one of them). might just be a bit of grit that I got lodged in there. i just need to make sure that i get my bung welded into the steering coloum on the same allignment that way we can install the steering wheel/data logger combo from his car when out testing and shareing the entry fee for the track days. Its rare that we have all cars going at the same time for one reasone or another at the moment.
