Hi

Car (2001 merc e class diseal) has a yellow warning light syay on for about 1 minute after start up.
Its the symbol with a coil/spring symbol.

Anyone know the likelyvcauses or what the warning light means?
Just some fault with ignition system?

Isn't that the glow-plug light? Or is that a different symbol?

Sounds like the glow plug symbol, I wonder if you've got a faulty one. Does it run poorly when cold starting?

It can mean more than glowplug. On Fords and X Type Jaguars it's 'on' when the plugs are heating up, and if it comes on when running it is an engine system malfunction indication.

Before you pull the trigger on 6 plugs get the codes read, as it might not be the plugs themselves.

On my BMW that light comes on to show the glow plugs are in operation, not faulty. It's only happened once after a very cold night.

Have you checked the handbook?

On some you have to remove inlet manifold.
But not on mine according to benz forums.
100 quid at local garage all in i should think.

Thank heavens - great car but always one large bill from scrapyard!

Drives like a 50k merc but worth 500 pounds!

If it's really old weather, the glowplugs can stay on after the engine fires. The old Pug XDIII engine did that - kept the glows on for about a minute on really cold starts. I've seen it on a 1.7CDTI Astra after a -17C start in December 2010 (that was an interesting job getting that thing going).

I had this on my old Merc too, as was worth nowt I just ignored it and carried on - for years. As we never had any weather cold enough to worry it and it was only one or two which had gone it ran fine.

I had one of them in sporthatch flavour, started at -7 ok but the rear wheels were frozen!

A few bashes with a rubber hammer didn't fix it either! ended up rocking it back and forth until it loosened - that and tepid water!

If the weather carries on as is it will probably be ok till next December.
I thought a 2001 would have rotted away by now? Mine did! Engine was fine, bodywork appalling. It went to Eastern Europe along with many others, where it could have ended up in Russia or kazakhstan.

Bodywork rusting away.
Just missed the extended goodwill merc warranty.

Shame as the estate is magnificent.

450 plus torque from v6 diesal

Huge car and 40 mpg on a decent run

Plus many parts are available 2nd hand of ebay

In 3/4 years its averagong 100 a month to run - insurance/mot/tax/service/tyres/repairs - everything except petrol which has averaged 30 plus mpg

For a Mercedes, the glowplug light that stays on signifies that one or more glowplugs are dead (or specifically out of tolerance). If you have the V6 cdi, they are reasonably easy to change out yourself - just get your engine hot and use no more than 25Nm of Torque to undo them. (Torque them up to 11Nm). Again, if this is the V6 cdi, it's also possible that the glowplug relay is on its way out, as the original design is subject to premature failiure. About £130 and 5 minutes to fit.

Dual fuel too?
