Problems Taxing Car Online

My son is a British soldier presently in Germany visiting myself. He has lost his V5 and not received a DVLA reminder (need a reference number from either to tax on line) told 4 to 6 weeks for new log book to arrive. Problem is, he has bought a new car (here in Germany) and wants to swap his insurance over so he can drive new car home (he's leaving his old car here in my garage) but the old car has to be insured so I can tax it on line at the end of the month. To complicate matters more (if possible) the old car has been sold to a UK friend of mine living here in Germany and will need to be taxed so he can drive it back to UK next month.

Only thing I can think of is for him to add new car to his existing insurance policy as a second vehicle (probably expensive as he's only 22). His old car will not be driven and remain stored in my garage until it is taxed.

Any alternative suggestions or remedies appreciated. I apologise in advance as the UK system is new to me (I have lived in Germany for the last 18 years) and really not up to speed with how things are done.
