Right being an old fart I know nothing of these new fangled car audio setups (used to think 8-track was cool!). I've got hold of an Alpine 'head unit' from another motor and it has a lead coming out the back which is clearly labelled subwoofer, now can I just buy one of these bolt it to the rear bulkhead and plug it into my unit OR do I need to ar$e about with sub-boxes and amplifiers ??

Nope, you will need to construct a box and run it through an amp. Subs work with specific volume boxes, so getting it right will be crucial. You will also need to fit a decent amp.

You could probably fi ta free air sub, won't sound as good a conventional one, but would elimintate the use of a box. But you'll still need an amp.

You don't need to match it all up ie. All Alpine. You can always go for somthing different.

But if you want to:

Alpine MRPM350 - £120

? 700Wx1 (MAX)

RMS 14.4V Power
? 350W x 1 [2ohms (1%THD)]
? 200W x 1 [4ohms (1%THD)]

How about one of these: Alpine MRPT220 2 Channel Amplifier

and one of these without a box thingy: KENWOOD-KFC-W2509 (apparently its free air man...)

all for under a ton?

Yep, that looks ok, as long as you bridge the two channels. Should work.
