I am considering changing from my 1988 911 3.2 Sport Coupé to a 2000 Aston Martin Vantage Coupé. Am I crazy or is this a sensible move?

Two very different cars. The 911 is more focused on one thing which it does well. The Aston in my opinion (and yes I am completely biased) will offer you a more fulfilling driving experience and sense of occasion whenever you jump in.Drive one and decide for yourself.

thanks Russ, the only Aston I have driven was a many years ago when they were brand new. A friend took delivery of a GT, I drove it very apprehensively but fell in love with the V12 Aston idea straight away.

Where do you think the values are just now, an important factor to me is the fact that my 911 is steadily appreciating in value, I really don't want to get in to something that depreciates.

Others will have their own opinions and yes, 911's are doing strong money, particularly in the wake of the 50th birthday. However, the DB7 is widely starting to be regarded as a modern classic. Whilst I wouldn't suggest you will buy one and make money on it, you certainly won't lose on it in the short term and in the long term who knows. Whether or not you are better keeping the 911 for its current appreciation in value, or go for the Aston experience which may not be appreciating as strongly, but you shouldn't lose on either is a tricky one and depends what you value most.

Great advice and gladly received. So long as I am unlikely to lose money I'd settle for that. Cars are for using, making a few bob is all very well but it's owning and driving them that gives the pleasure.

Because I only cover 2,500 miles or so a year the difference in cost of ownership isn't an issue.

Is the correct answer! My sentiments entirely. The fun is in the driving not in the bean counting.

Im in a similar situation as im going from a 996 C4S to a Vantage V8. Similar cars but get about doing their business differently. The mileage on the 996 is approaching 70k and its the noise, the presence and the fact it looks so good i decided to go for a Aston as my next car.
Im going to go to a main dealer and get a AMV8 when i return from Afghanistan in Apr. I may not like it but i dont think so, for the reasons above.

Have you driven an AMV8? I test drove one back to back with a 997 C2 (non S), the 911 was a noticeably better drivers car, the AMV8 was gorgeous & had a better interior though.
I ended up buying a 996 C2 Coupe which I still have 4.5 years later.

I havnt yet but although im happy with the Porsche my situation allows me to go for a decent 2nd hand AMV8. Im sure it will be a different beast but i seem to be going past the throwing around corners style of driving, i do enough of that in Afghanistan! Hopefully ill get a test drive in Apr.

Go in with an open mind, just be prepared not to be wowed by one after your 996 though.

Hope the remainder of your Tour is a safe one smile

The Porsche 997s is a great car but in no way is the Vantage inferior as a drivers car. I prefer the more muscular true Brit feel of the Aston to the Porsche . In terms of overall feel good factor there is no comparison .

Each to their own and all but most people who have driven both would agree the 911 is the better drivers car.

Feel good factor however is a very different thing...

Just to help out here, AMV8 is the model name for the 70's / 80's car that you see in the Bond movie, The Living Daylights. The "upgraded" version of the AMV8 was to Vantage specification. Now the car to which you are referring to is called Vantage which to my knowledge is the first time Aston Martin has used the name to denote a model - rather than an upgraded version of a model - if that makes sense. And then the V12 came along, so then it became know as the V8 Vantage.

Are you still awake at the back??? getmecoat

Ah yes, 996 has a flakey engine. Unless it's the turbo, which doesn't.

Ahh dont believe the internet scare mongers (says he who had his engine replaced at 48,000miles for a brand new Porsche supplied one costing 14k!!).
