981 throttle pedal travel

Hi Folks, after four weeks of patient running in I'm now able to fully stretch my new Cayman. Thing I've found is the throttle pedal goes down to what feels like a natural end however if pressed hard then extends further. At this point the PDK box jumps down a few gears regardless of which mode it's being driven in. Is the extended travel purely a tool to activate the down shift or do I need to fully press the pedal to get full engine performance?
