In short, my winter tyres have finally been delivered(!), but now wonder if it's worth the time/money/hassle of getting them fitted, given the continued mild weather down south.

Are we expecting a cold snap, which will last until June??

Personally, I wouldn't bother, but then I can't ever see the need for winter tyres in the South.

There is a little bit of chat about February potentially being cold and snowy, but I would rate this at <20% chance. If it does suddenly drop cold for whatever reason, just whip them in and get them fitted.

The HA will have plenty of grit left after the warm winter so far.

I'd say stick em on.

Imagine how you'd feel if you didn't and then you ended up having a bump when the snow and ice comes along! Better to be safe!

Could always get a second set of ropey alloys and have them fitted ready to swap over. Saves a bit of effort at least.

ATS near me will put tyres on loose alloys for tea money.

With all this standing water everywhere = YES - the tyres will work better than your normal tyres, get them on.
Plus there will most likely still be plenty of frosty mornings before end of March.

Mine are going on next week.

Mainly because with the greasy roads I tend to scrub my RE050s alot quicker. I also tend to drive early morning / late night so get the colder temps (7 degrees is often stated as the magic number biggrin)

Good point. I think I'll make the journey to get them on.

Really? My uniroyal rainsports are streets ahead of my nokian wrg2s in the rain, in fact i've not bothered to change them over this year. Mid Jan and we've had 3 mild frosts so far!

Depends on the tyres to be honest, some winters are worse in wet conditions than summers.

Personally I'd wait. Depends on how essential being able to drive with unexpected snowstorm/ice is for you.

He'd probably be thinking - Hmmm, what a muppet for not driving to the conditions.

There's plenty of time left where it could snow, especially through Feb and March. But nobody can tell you for sure if the tyres are worth fitting. It's always a gamble.

^This^ plus if you can get them on some other alloys, so much the better.

See, I'm the complete opposite, simply because i'd be hacked off if I'd paid the money and was still stuck!

Don't you start, last time some of us trotted out the common sense approach of driving carefully and to the conditions we were accused by the winter tyres fanciers of being reckless murderers or something equally as Daily Mail.

Has anyone got a link to the EVO winter tyre tests where the summer tyre outperforms all the winter tyres in the wet ?

Don't forget that you want to run about 500 miles on them to scrub them in/get the setting agents off them before they start to perform properly. Assuming you're swapping them on the same set of rims and 48 hours is about the most reliable notice you'll have of a cold patch, can you get the tyres in to your fitter to swap them over then do 500 miles in that time?

I'd stick them on now. There's certainly no harm in it, there are two months of winter left to go and the road temps in morning and evening are cold enough for them to be gripping just as well (if not better than) summers anyway - what exactly do you lose by putting them on now?

In short, I would have to take an arvo off work (can't do it at the weekend at the mo), would need to do a 50 mile round trip to get them (long story), and then repeat the process circa March time, and find somewhere to put the summers in the interim.

Generally, a bit of a faff.

Why did you buy winter tyres again? wink

The worst weather we've had in past years has come later in the season. December isn't winter, and decent snowfalls in December are still uncommon for mid-southern England. No-one has a scoobies what the rest of the season holds weather wise - there's no snow on the horizon, but 'the horizon' in weather forecasting terms is about a week away (and even that only gives an inkling, proper forecasts only firm up a couple of days before.) So who knows. I'm running winters but it was much less of a faff for me to switch. Personally I'd rather have them and not need them.

ETA:

If you decide not to fit them then follow this thread. If you notice Puggit and Schmalex's desks start to rise then re-consider fitting them.

I think you need to consider the circumstances under which you'll fit them. Are you going to 1) fit them when convenient, 2) wait until there's a definite change in the weather when it may be less convenient or 3) cancel the order.

What you could lose is quite a lot of grip in the "wrong" conditions of course. And please don't mention the 7 deg rule please. 2 deg is a more realistic threshold.
