My friend's R53 keeps showing the engine warning light (orange) on speedo, in the tacho solid orange engine light comes up just the same as the warning lamp on the speedo. It has the odd missfire she says.

We took it to the local garage and they said it needed putting on the diagnostic computer at BMW as they didn't have the unlock codes. It has cleared itself for the second time now and is not showing at present.

I am happy to purchase one of the leads and CD's on ebay to interrogate the OBC, but am now concerned that it won't work.

Any advice?

What car / engine is it? The clubman was not launched until 2007 as an R56. Is it a Cooper or S or One? Need more accurate information.

Thanks for confirming my Mini idiocy ;-)

It is off to A1BN in Stevenage tomorrow, fingers crossed the error message has gone for the moment.

This caused issue on my R53, tried to use it whilst driving and it kept causing the ECU to stutter

Still good for fault reading though, wouldn't recommend real time monitoring though

Thought about leaving mine plugged in at all times, but noticed its powered up even with the ignition off and the cat locked, so didn't want to cause any battery issues, but no idea what kind of draw it would have, saying that I noticed today my memory stick I use for music in my aux drive is lit up and powered at all times too.

Diagnosis undertaken. VANOS exhaust seems to be the problem. The have reset it and said to bring it back next week to see the state of play.

They also said the oil capture/breather was not looking great and the clutch was high hence a new one was in the offing.

We were also advised to avoid supermarket fuel, and to buy the premium fuels.

Can I buy any odb bluetooth reader or can anyone recommend one, ebay?
