Hello,

I remember a while ago the club were talking about 2 way radios when out on a drive, to communicate with other cars in the group. Can someone tell me what sort of radios you use? I have a pair of Cobra MT800 radios here at work, it says it works with all PMR 446 radios. Will this work?

Cheers,

Dan

Looking at this too for Le Mans Classic road trip although I think handheld CB's will be the way to go for us, as the signal is much better.

How do hand held radios fair with the regard to the law, bearing in mind it's illegal to use a hand held phone in the car ?

The PMR radios (walkie talkies) are fine up to 'line of site' range (I can easily get over a mile with mine) and are legal to use in the UK (as they are SSB - i.e you can talk, or listen, but not both at the same time!!)
If I'm wrong I'm sure one of the BiB will correct me.......
Very useful though in convoy - I have four of them for 'club use'.

Perfectly legal - the legislation was drafted to include only mobile phones by specifying the frequency ranges used ( the 900 and 1800 GSM bands - which every mobile phone even 4 g ones can work on as they fall back to to the lowest common denominator in areas of poor signal or high dmand)

in terms of in car use

PMR 446 even the 'professional' ones are sub optimal - as their aerial is fixed to the set

if you pay the requistie moolah and get a UK general / Uk light PMR licence and proper VHF high band or UHF PMRs you have a far better chance especially in something with a metal body as you can use a mag mount / clamp mount external aerial and remote speaker mic ...

Is that different to the marine VHF licence? I have a marine VHF licence and handheld VHF radio, but assume I can only use that at sea.

Yes, hence the reason it is called a PMR LICENCE...

Dan....forgot to speak to you yesterday at Southways - doh!

Eric Appleby group purchased 6/8 radios from Maplins..I think?
These are the higher radiated power units for which you have to have a license. Steve Shaw has organised a blanket license from OFCOM covering Hants TVRCC, and any radios used by it's members.

Steve holds a couple for use on club runs, and one or two of us purchased our own.
If you want your own pair (oo-er) then Maplins should be able to supply. Might be worth contacting Steve or Eric to confirm Maplins as the supplier and the brand.

Hi Nick the radios that we are using is the Mitex General UHF High Power walkie talkie it has a 5 watt power output and good range. I have one which I purchased via Steve and Eric for club runs, I am not sure who supplied them.
