No it's nothing rude but I just tried out my new Steve Heath ECUmate which kept pumping out a code 69. According to the guide this is a problem with the gear selector switch and is only applicable to Land Rovers. So what does this mean?

I'm hoping I plugged it into the right socket as there was nowhere in the wiring loom it seemed to fit that was just hanging free, so I unplugged something and plugged it in there. Seemed to do alright as it gave me a code for a stepper motor fault when the car idled below 500 rpm for a second.

There is a white plug on the end of a couple of wires in the passenger footwell on my car, with a very short U shaped piece of black insulated wire inserted. Pull out the wire and insert the ECUmate plug. Put the wire back when you have finished

Code 69 is the auto box signal. It is only applicable to land rovers as TVRs don't have auto boxes. But and there is always a but coming... the code is either suppressed by tweaking the software or the signal is grounded either in the wiring loom or in the ECU itself. Typically a 560 ohm pin resistor is used between the ground and earth. This is how TVR and Marcos get round the problem.

So if your TVR is showing the code then it could have had a std ECU fitted without the TVR chip or the signal connection/resistor is missing.

Would I fix it? Well it all depends... if the chip is a standard LR chip then it could be the wrong one for the engine and in this case it could be going into a limp home mode.
If its a TVR chip then I would look at grounding the signal as it is possible that the ECU is a LR replacement without the mod.
