I'm currently driving about 200 miles a day in the West country/South Wales.... I can accept the fact that I appear to be spending so much time under water, that I've nearly qualified as a U-Boat commander! I also accept the 45 year old bleached blonde woman in the middle lane who puts her fog lights on when its raining!

The cynical part of me just wonders.......is the reason that its so prevalent, due to the fact that a Traffic Copper would actually have to get out of his 5 series BMW, in the rain in order to issue the ticket?

Just putting it out there smile

i prefer to be stuck in trafic behind a 4x4 type thing

in the rain
at night

while the silly sod has rear fogs on and foot on brakes so much red light blinding the the crap out of me that makes me want a james bond type car where the lights roll and guns shot the lights out

that or I just need to avoid croydon as every car there seems to have lights and fogs, front and back turned on the moment the key goes in

So who are all these people ? I mean yes ,fog lights go on ( front and rear ) at the slightest excuse , all the threads condemning MLM's , all those 40 mph every where , regardless of the speed limit , the no indicator brigade etc etc etc .

Is not one of these people on here any where ? and tell us why they do these thing's ?

What about all those people who turn their headlights on as soon as it rains - shocking!

Foglights will come on but they'll still be doing 80mph.

I can live with that, my car has driving lights on permanently. I would just like to shoot the following....

drivers with fog lights on....when no fog

middle lane motorists....twice

The guy driving up my arse.....when theirs twenty million cars in front of me and we are all looking at the 40mph variable speed limit as a truly aspirational thing!

The car that sticks to my offside rear quarter like glue for fifty fecking miles, so that when I try and use the inside lane as it should be used...every time I have to pull out to overtake a lorry....he/she is bloody there in the middle lane blocking me!!!!

Being stuck behind two lorrys on an A road and when we get to the one stretch of dual carriageway which is precisely 500 yards long.....the bd whose lorry will do 57mph decides to overtake the bd whose lorry will do 56mph !?!?....this one might warrant three shots!!

This is South Wales, it's a common thing. Deal with it or get off the road.

I've switched rear fogs on once or twice in torrential rain on motorways in daylight only, and then only on occassions where there's been so much spray and the traffic is generally slowing down and I'm struggling to see the car in front with tail-lights only switched on unless I follow too closely. If I can't see headlights behind me in those circumstances I have sometimes illuminated my rear fog just so that anyone who does approach fast behind me can see me from further back.

Basically - if there's that much water spray in the air that visibility is as poor as fog and I judge that I won't be seen by someone approaching behind until he gets uncomfortably close, I'll switch them on. If/when he appears, I'll switch them off again on the basis that he now knows I'm there.

Stupid and illegal... how are we supposed to differentiate between your fog lights and your brake lights.....yes you are more visible...but whose fault is it when you brake and the driver behind doesnt pick up on the difference and tanks into the back of you?

You MUST use headlights when visibility is seriously reduced, generally when you cannot see for more than 100 metres (328 feet). You may also use front or rear fog lights but you MUST switch them off when visibility improves (see Rule 236). Law RVLR regs 25 & 27

Possibly illegal, but not stupid in my judgement. If I can see you following they'll go off, but that's besides the point and if you run up my arse because you can't tell brake lights from fog lights from Christmas Tree fairy lights that's your fault. If you're tanking up behind me in heavy road spray and *think* I'm braking as you approach at a stupid speed and slow down accordingly, then the fogs have done the job I wanted them to do.

Mini has driving lights (which are half the power of fog lights but in the same housing) which cannot be turned off, when the main lights are on, to my knowledge. They're not intrusive but noticeable at the least.

I never really turn off my lights in the winter as it is a (permanently unwashed) grey car and with it always being so dull out, I want to stay visibly seen.

It's correct to put on rear fog-lights in the rain if spray is impacting visibility significantly.

how is this stupid? stupid would be the inability to distinguish between brake and fog lights. I do exactly the same thing and as he said, if you are close enough to see him then he (and I) would have switched the rear fog off.
