Ok so I had an old car that was not worth saving and I stripped it of all its useful parts. I declared it SORN with DVLA.

A friend who runs his own small scrap metal business then collected the sorry looking shell and took it away last September, weighing it in at a local metal dealers. I gave him the V5 expecting him to complete the paperwork but alas he wasnt an authorised vehicle dismantler. So the logbook is back and still in my name and in the eyes of the DVLA the car still exists on a SORN so I need to sort this out now.

On the back of the V5C under responsibilities as a registered keeper it says amongst other things;-

You should take your vehicle to an Authorisied Treatment Facility ATF to issue a certificate of destruction (CoD). If you have broken the vehicle yourself you must either tax it or SORN it until you have taken it to an ATF or tell us you no longer have the vehicle.

So should it be as simple as that last line, ring them on Monday and "tell them I no longer have the vehicle"?

Assuming that the V5C is one of the up to date "red" ones, there is no longer the box to tick to say that the RK has scrapped the vehicle (there was such a box on the older "blue" V5Cs, and the RK could just tick it and put the date, sign the V5C and post it off).

Write to DVLA saying that the vehicle has been scrapped on such-a-date and enclosing the V5C (perhaps write "SCRAPPED" on it?), scan or copy everything (your letter and the V5C) before it goes in the envelope, and get a "receipt of posting" at the post office when you post it.

Don't phone them; this needs to be done in writing with evidence of having done this in case of any (not-unlikely rolleyes ) SNAFU in the future wink .
