I thought i'd ask the PH masses for some advice.

My work offers a 'Green Scheme' for cars. Basically pretty much anything under 120g Co2.

I'm due to hand back my current car in May and need to find something new.

I elected for a BMW F30 318d SE Luxury two years ago, not the most inspiring car but its served me well.

This time around i have some criteria that need to be met....

- Ideally under £400 a month.
- minimum 140 bhp or a light weight option...
- needs to be able to bang down the M3 at 70 + 15 or so.
- 5 door
-

I'm not too worried about spec, i can add the odd thing when i order.

To give some idea the Beemer is £540 a month... A Volvo V40 D2 (R-Design) is £390-410 and a VW Golf £350-460 depending on spec...

Does anyone else have a sub 120g car they can recommend?

Tack.

It's not the most exciting of cars, but an A3 might be worth considering. The Sportbacks are a decent size and the 2.0tdi has 150bhp and 114g co2/km. Mine was £220 p/month exc VAT on a 6+36 through Audi and it's a pleasant place to cover miles. Plus since the monthly lease is cheap you'll have plenty of budget left for extra kit.

I'm sure others will be along shortly with more PH-worthy alternatives though!

The volvos are supremely comfortable, and the D2 is fine on motorways if a bit gutless on single carriageways. Overtaking needs planning...

Maybe an Octavia VRS? 180 horsepower and a decent sized boot and rear seats.

Octavia VRS tdi estate/saloon?

We have the bog standard non VRS version as a pool car at work, everyone seems impressed with it.

BMW 520d Luxury. Now sub 120g/km. Better than a 3 Series. Make it the auto. Everything you need is standard, including Xenons, Pro Nav, etc. I doubt there is a better normal 120g/km car on the market than this.

Have you looked at the V60 / S60 D5?
Only 114gr and 215bhp - sadly Volvo are discontinuing their 5 cylinder engines shortly, which is a damn shame as they are much more characterful than a 4 cylinder.

Is this car only for work and you have something else or sole car if so a few extra £ PCM seems sensible.

To be frank you could get the most basic - but comfortable car and that being the cheapest. Bank the savings extra holiday of whatever as this car will strictly be a tool to cover miles
A Passat 1.6 tdi blue motion with winter pack estate is a nice car really comfy seats and you'll be into the 70's mpg.

Our scheme is the same, everything but fuel included. We're lucky enough to get our company car sample lists in spreadsheet format, which makes it easier to search and filter.

I'll hahe a poke through ours looking for anything equal to or less than £400 (in our scheme - which I think is a little cheaper than yours) and equal to or less than 120gCO2/km, for the faster cars in that set.

Ok, so I've had a look at options that would fit your criteria from our list (under £400, <120gCO2 etc) on the scheme at my company, and you've already priced up the top 3, all of which are miles more expensive on your scheme - in your quotes, they are all over £400 and on mine they are under it.

If it was me and I really wanted to stick near £400 for a car that's mostly going to be on Motorways, I'd probably suck up the extra £34.17 per month and get one of these:
FORD MONDEO 5DR 12CMY MONDEO 5DR HATCH 2.0 TDCI 163 ECO TITANIUM X BUSINESS EDITION DIESEL MANUAL £24,585

What I'd actually do personally is hang the budget and spec up an F30 320d ED but that's a lot more dosh.

Interesting yours is cheaper!

The reasoning behind this is to justify my Ducati's existence!!!

I'm desperate to buy a new house and pay for a wedding in the next couple of years.

I also have a wedding to attend in the Cayman Islands in Jan 2015!

I do like the Zenith lease, I've had two services and 4 tyre's under the current deal all free of course.

My commute to work is only 7 miles but i like a decent sized motor for the 100 mile round trip to see my parents.

I'm pondering either the Seat FR or maybe an A1 5 door... Problem with the Audi is a hate them, BMW through and through......

I've just got an A5 sportback on the company scheme... 2.0tdi 177bhp. Not the fastest, but it's well equipped, quick enough for the commute and ad hoc runs up and down the country - plus it's quite inside.

First Audi I've had - normally a Lexus man, but the CT200h just didn't cut it in the low emmisions category compared to the German stuff.
