I have driven one lately without one and was told not all need one but I'm skeptical.

Also what does the little orange 'T' warning light on the dashboard mean? It's not flashing or anything.

The orange T is a warning, usually an overspeed but can also mean 'driving without card' too.

As for a beeper, it's a good idea to have one and is probably a legal requirement on all new trucks.

No not all hgv`s need reversing signals but it is getting more difficult to find places that will let you in without one.
If the orange `T` was lit up all day youv`e either got a faulty digi card, the tacho itself is faulty or you put the card in upside down.It will come up when driving without card in.
Also it comes up when you have an overspeed for more than one minute.Pressing ok twice on the tacho will cure it.

It's one of those things where the health and safety guy can get a pat on the back for coming up with an initiative.

Was the bleeped switched off ?

I turn mine off when I deem it unnecessary to need it.
