Teleconverter Adapter Tubes - Necessary?

Hi all. I recently bought a 1.7x teleconverter lens, which fits nicely directly onto my camera.
However, Panasonic insist that I need to spend another £40 on an Adapter Tube.
What purpose will this serve? The camera lens doesn't touch the tele lens, so I can't see the benefit? The pictures are as good as I expected from a teleconverter lens (I'm not a big fan of these anyway!) so what do they want me to use this for?

It screws onto the camera and lets you attach a filter/lens while allowing the camera to use the full length of the zoom up the middle of it.
From a quick look it looks like a plain plastic tube with no electrical contacts, so a cheaper generic model will do the same for a lot less money.
Although if your converter attaches to the end of your lens and works fully, I don't see why it's needed.

How exactly does it work, doe this screw to the outter section (when the camera is turned off) and gives enough spacing to zoom fully? then you by whatever 58mm lenses you need instead of the 46mm lenses youd need to screw directly to the lense? if that makes sense.
could be interested if I can find out that 58mm lenses are more redily available then 46mm ones and it doesnt effect any wide angle photos?
- Yes you got it spot on, once this is screwed on it lets you zoom right out with any 58mm filters or adapters on etc, I used a step down ring from 58mm - 55mm as i had 55mm filters at that size but no longer have so selling the adapter as no longer req. Hope this helps
