i have a Renault Clio 1.2 extreme and i currently just have it standard and i want to make it look nicer by maybe lowering it and putting some new alloys on. I have been looking at buying the clio 182 alloys and the RS grille and putting them on my car and lowering it but have no idea how much to lower it by. anyone have any suggestion on how i could make it look nicer as i want to keep it for a few years.

thanks

Why not leave it standard for another year or so, save your 'modifying fund' and once you have another year no claims get an actual 182
Not the answer your looking for but that's what I'd do

I would but iv only just turned 18 and will still be 18 on my next insurance renewal and would it not be expensive for a 18 year old to get insured in a 2 litre car with only 1 year no cliams?

35mm lowering springs would probably take it lower than a standard RS. Plus they shouldnt really affect the ride too much, whilst being quite subtle.

Try taking a look at other Clios and choose a height you think looks good, try not to go too low or it just becomes impractical.

This is a friends 5 door, very low and on 182 Cup (Speedline Turini) wheels...

Been there, done that. It won't make your car or your life any better.

Save your money, build up your no claims and you could look at something more performance orientated in a couple of years.

^^^^ have to agree with this ^^^^

If you keep it standard and straight it will no doubt be worth more than a half cocked 182 look-a-like when you come to sell it on too. Get some more no claims and cash together and get the actual hothatch you want.

Look on the bright-side your 18, things could be worse

Probably not as expensive as for an 18 year old with a (badly) modified hatchback. If that's not a great big alarm bell for insurance companies then nothing is.

As for that picture there complete with yellow strap for towing it off the race track - I'm not even sure where to start with that!

Whats makes it badly modified? A couple of OEM bits to make it look a little smarter isnt exactly badly modified. Its not as if he's gonna put a massive bodykit on it.

(Although I agree with you on the tow strap. Stupid on a road car tbh)

Oh, and also, I think lowering and 182 wheels are the ideal place to start.

It's French, the tow strap is useful for when it breaks down.

It's all a bit of fun, regardless of whether you like the idea of modifying a 1.2 Clio or not the people that want to don't care. Provided the OP does nothing unsafe he's free to put a maxpower style fibreglass body kit on it and scissor doors if that's what he likes as far as I'm concerned.

You missed the point... the insurance cost for someone his age to lower a Clio and add alloys will probably pay for a 182...

Im guessing your also going to tell your insurers about these modifications?

Makes it look stupid to anyone out of their teens.

The old boy said better not stter!

I did what the 2nd poster said 8 years ago with a 172. Funny thing is I've kept it all this time standard. It's completely oem. Must have saved a few quid on the insurance etc.

Currently looking to change it for a 335d msport touring. Great big bus that is!

Best advice! If I could have my yoof again this is what I'd be doing. Driving £500 snotters and spending as little on them as possible until I had enough NCB and age to insure something worth having.

Get over to, www.cliosport.net

Lots of 'project' threads etc of this type to give you some info and ideas.

I was in the same situation as you, took me 5 years of owning a 1.2 before insurance became reasonable on a 182, got one and loved it... really wish i still had it actually, would love another!
