Certainly not normal.like a chopping sound.does it change when revved or driven?
I reckon it could be a ropey supercharger.the noise is right in your face not hidden lowdown.other than that maybe a problem with the top end......you bought it or is it on a forecourt?

Doesn't sound quite right for a chain, but I can't think what else it would be. I would definitely be pulling it apart though.

Hold on, this video is 3 years old?

Potential issue with the valve lifters? I know the VAG 1.4 blocks suffer with this and it's a similar noise as my car has it !

The car is on a forecourt, and I wont be going back!

The vid is not the actual car, I found the clip on you tube, but its a perfect similarity.

I thank you for your help-PH at its best.

Cam chain tensioner if your lucky and the chain hasn't stretched beyond its serviceable limit, hows your oil level? As too low won't help.
