Owning more than one car while living alone
Discussion
How many do this? I'm more than satisfied with the current steed (e39 M5) but always find myself browsing the classifieds, fancying something else in addition for not a huge amount of cash just to add a bit of variety. Wanting what you don't have and all.
The thing is, I can't help but think a second car would get next to no use, short of alternating which car to drive to work- but then an M5 is so good at so many things will it just be wasted money? To get something that's a bit different to it I'd fancy a convertible of sorts but the likes of the MX5/MR2 don't really grab my attention and are 2 cylinders short.
Have always liked the Boxster but I suspect Porsche running costs combined with the M5 might end in tears, albeit repairs could always wait since there's a substitute...

I'm keeping an eye on the classifieds for something to go alongside my Elise.
Have used it for 60k miles as an only car, but costs are getting vaguely silly, and fancy something cheap and cheerful for more mundane journeys.
Thinking £1,500 106 GTi or something like that - the way I see it I'll make the money back in tyres and other replacement bits and bobs within a couple of years.
Think it depends what the cars are though, as you say it's easy for one to never get used.

i would have thought with an m5
something like an mr2 as a run around could end up saving you a lot of money
depending on what sort of mileage you are doing in it
It would but it just doesn't tickle my fancy. Like I said, the M5 has such a broad range of ability it'd be a waste to not use it often.something like an mr2 as a run around could end up saving you a lot of money

As far as convertibles go, I can only think of the Boxster and S2000 interesting me really (without spending a chunk more as an entry fee), but that's without ever having driven either. Talk of nervous handling in the latter puts me off despite the fantastic looks.

I live alone. Currently have four cars, latest addition being a Boxster S
How do you drive them? Deliberately alternate between them or just whatever takes your fancy?Forester is for Tip runs and general abuse/ DIY duties
Corrado/Boxster are the cars generally driven depending on weather. But, I have always tried to alternate.
Ultimately I would like to sub in a Porker 993 /TVR Chim for the Boxster/Corrado
I generally take the train to work!
I have 4 cars, neither of which are particularly exciting/work at the same time. Plus I live on my own.
Discovery - for off roading/taking to work
Transit - for work when the discovery doesn't work.
S60 D5 - for the long trips
Mk3 fiesta xr2i - for a bit of fun.
They all get used regularly, apart from the xr2i, it has no engine.

I have two cars and it's just me (for just now anyway...):
Maserati GT MC Stradale - Rollcage, four-point harnesses etc.
Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8 - Lowered, custom exhaust.
Guess which one I use on trackdays.............!?
I justify having both because I don't have to justify having both to anyone else. Both get used for pleasure as the mood takes me. I like to think that I make the most of it now, because you never know when your situation may change...

I live on my own. Normally alterate between a winter and summer car. At the moment I have E36 M3 saloon for summer and an 1999 E39 528i SE for winter. Although sometimes I think even the E39 might be too good for winter as its only done 66, 000 miles.
I am lucky to have a two car driveway and a garage which you can actually fit a car in which helps.
They will be joined in March by a Ford Puma 1.6 project which I plan to use as a track car.

I have an E92 320d and a Triumph GT6. Having a classic means the choice is rather easy - E92 for distance and every day - the GT6 for weekends, special days out, off to watch a race or for a camping trip etc. When i get in the old banger, it's an occasion.
I can imagine the the M5 being so capable it can be hard to imagine how you'd use a second car. I think you hit the nail on the head though - it must be significantly different to your current wheels otherwise you've just doubled your cost for no reason. Perhaps something much lighter and more focussed? Lotus/caterham/etc. OR something old and lovely.
It might sound daft on paper, but a boxster might be a little too close to the m5.
Before anything else, figure out exactly what you're missing in the m5.

I have a Mondeo for commuting and an E36 328 convertible for the summer. The E36 was a self reward for a year's very hard work and there was nothing else I wanted at the time that would have come close to giving the enjoyment for the price (£1275). Mainly because I don't know the right pimps I suppose...
I don't think living on your own is relevant.
I have a 520d as a daily and a TVR for weekend fun. The wife has her own car so the BMW and Tiv are only driven by me.
Different cars for different moods.
I know the cost can be slightly different but I guess you have more than one pair of shoes and possible more than one watch. It's the same principle.
If you want it and can afford it, do it. I would suggest getting something completely different to your daily though.
Good luck.
