Anyone in a yacht syndicate?
Discussion
I used to work for SailTime. They do a very cost effective yacht share scheme based on one guy buying a boat and 7 others paying an annual fee for use. SailTime make it worth the buyers time because they cover the maintenance and berthing costs while the boat is in the scheme. If you had the money to buy, that could be a great way to offset the costs if the usage pattern worked for you. Otherwise buy a membership
It's a franchise so bases are popping up all over the world. In Britain at least the boats tended to be Beneteaus, both power and sail.

Make sure everyone has similar expectations and objectives; the wheels will come off very quickly if one partner wants to DIY all maintenance and cruise the fjords using a sextant and charts while the other wants the yard to do everything upto and including replenishing the lavvy paper and cruise the limpid blue waters of the caribbean on autopilot using state of the art multipanel touch screen displays.
Put it down on paper and make sure there's an agreed escape route for partners who want to sell up; the RYA have template yacht share contracts available to members.
My old man was in a yachtshare with 2 others; even though they all got on fine and had similar objectives, there was still plenty of things that caused friction, mostly to do with spending money on repairs and upgrades.

Thanks chaps,
I am thinking of a private 'fractional ownership' syndicate rather than one of the managed schemes. Boat would be a cruising yacht up to about 42 feet, most probably based in the Ionian.
Does the RYA template deal with the potential issues regarding yard vs DIY maintenance etc?
