David Appleby Clutch & Flywheel Upgrade Weight Differences

Forgot to put these up a few week back when I popped in to DAE

As you can see the difference between the standard clutch plate and flywheel and the lightened flywheel and 3 plate clutch.(Edited... Twin Plate) Also the weight of the uprated parts are pushed more towards the centre as to improve it further.

Standard Kit
Total Weight 17.79 Kg

DAE Kit
Total Weight 15.214 Kg

A post so worthy that it should be kept on topic ad infinitum!

Guessing it must be a Prodrive / AM racing set up from the clearly visible part no and AM logo - manufactured by Valeo no less in the first week in July last year unless I'm very much mistaken.

Bet my local motor factor couldn't supply me one though.... drat hehe

Hang on a minute, I have an alternative suggestion. Have a good dump before you go out for a drive and save £3K.

Better still, spend £2K on a carbon fibre road bike (no brand loyalty specified nono), ride it on George's patch all year to wind him up, lose much more than 2.5KG in weight and still have £1K change to spend on petrol and wine biggrin

Reminds me of when I spoke to my wife about lightweight sports pack wheels for my V8V and stressed the weight saving and therefore potential for better MPG. She suggested a diet would save far more weight and be much cheaper. Harsh, but in my case a ring of truth about it smile

Thats not really what its about, its about rotating mass in the engine, its nothing at all to do with losing weight in the vehicle.

It is also worth noting less is not always more.

Not bothered who you choose to fit them but the Lightweight Flywheel and Twin Plate Clutch that I have just had fitted to my DB9 has transformed the car. It is a dream to drive now compared to what it was like when I took initial delivery of the car. As I said in a previous post, it was that bad I almost returned the car....

Mark, I may have missed this, but have you posted about what the new clutch feels like? Clearly given their experience DAE know what they're doing, and it would be good to know how the end result felt, and what the overall service is like.

Mark, your first comment states three plate clutch - is that right? I have only read about twin plate clutches here, is the Appleby one an additional plate?

How does the cintered bronze affect smoothness, is there a noticeable difference or is it smooth as the OEM clutch?

Can someone clarify whether they are just reselling and fitting the Prodrive clutch or whther they have gound-up designed this solution themselves? Tony's post above seems to indicate from the serial numbers it's just an off the shelf part. Is is slightly modified or not at all?

In which case it's just a Appleby-fitted Prodrive clutch, right? Not a 'David Appleby Clutch & Flywheel upgrade'.

Genuinely curious and happy to learn something, there is zero infor on the website, just hyperbole on here. And prompted to post after this rant by a guy who mentions DAE every day but seems to spit feathers every time BR are mentioned...

Guys, another thread that started well and got more and more references to Bamford Raid/Rise/ Rose! I like other PH'rs are sick of hearing this crap...we get it! You love BR! We don't want to hear it in every thread! It's not right. I used BR myself and like Mike but I don't understand why people are prostituting themselves to just one vendor, it's frankly embarrassing. We need the moderators to get involved here, this doesn't happen on Porsche/TVR/other PH sections and shouldn't here :-(
That, I thought, was frankly embarrassing.

I missed that rant about BR smile

isnt this just normal though? people buy a brand/manufacturer and if they like it they talk about it. If there are many brands, many get talked about

in the niche market world of Aston Martin there are a few specialists for servicing and a few suppliers for performance upgrades ...thats it

so if theres a hundred of us on here and 20 people have upgrades from BR, then they get talked about more than a company thats just done a couple of upgrades

same as servicing, although there is more choice there and many use those who are geographically closer AND recommended

all seems like normal market behaviour to me smile

Im pleased to see that David Appleby give the option of just replaced the worn part...so like for like if you just want a clutch now for a Vantage its nearer £1200, very reasonable . Personally I might not want to spend £3k on upgrades when I plan to trade the car in 6 months later...

Yes, when you're buying a used Aston, you hear a lot about having to replace the clutch, and if you knew there is a £1,200 option to be had, people wouldn't worry so much.

I have to say sending a threatening PM is pretty lame. Particularly if the inference is that you will attend an event that someone has taken a lot of trouble to organise just to intimidate someone.
Oh and welcome back Yeti, where have you been hiding ???

Agreed, big difference to feel. To the points raised by the OP, the weight and its distribution (distance of the mass from the axis of rotation) combine to generate what's known as the moment of inertia, it's this property that resists the engine speeding up or slowing down. For a simple 'hoop' shape this is calculated as I=MR^2. So the radius term being squared is the more important factor compared to mass of the thing (ie, mass closer to the centre is better than just being lightened)

For me the extra durability (offered by the twin plate combined with the sintered material) and the improved lightness of pushing the thing in are most important.

Back on topic chaps.

Does any one know when newts perk their heads out of the pond? It must be a bit unseasonable because, having an address of Pond House, I have noticed an alarming amount of them around.

Welcome back yeti....see you are still trying to upset any opposition to your beloved BR....in answer to your above post....who gives a st....the op has put on about the weight of his new clutch....who fking cares who made it...it could have been made by Lego for all I care...as long as the op is happy with the work and happy with the service received why does it need you and others to demean it in any way you can.....if the clutch was fitted by BR....I am sure your reaction would be different....

And the other bit...not embarrassing at all....just a fact the a lot of people who come on here agree with the sentiment....

Threat bit not so good.....but if they require I can get some blow up sumo outfits....all for charity you understand...

Anyway rant over....how have you been?....married life I hope is treating you well....and has the morgan got wood worm yet?
