What the flippin' 'eck was that? Winter Watch BBC2 (Eagle)

I was watching Winter watch tonight and a presenter (I didn't catch his name) was trying to film a Golden Eagle and did, conveniently, at the end of the skit.

However, I noticed that he was using a D800 (I think - Well, that was the strap on it) but what was that mahoosive lens on the front of it? And that chunky tripod too?

It was a D8oo but the lens was white a la Canon!!?

The tripod looked like he was using his heavy duty video tripod

Looked like an old Canon FD mount 400mm f2.8 with a modification for use as a video lens (probably removing the click stops on the aperture adjustment ring.) You can get FD to Nikon body adapters but I wonder if this one has included the fitting mod in the aperture adjustment engineering.

In one section it looks like he has a multiplier fitted as well.

The tripod would be a must for video work in that wind even if he was not shooting video.

What a way to earn a living, eh? Wandering about the hills for a few days with a crew in tow looking for birds.
